Each year, he visits a local nonprofit organization that houses children receiving treatments for cancer, as well as a nursing home in Masaya, Nicaragua. Located on the hospital’s grounds, Casa Albergue provides housing, food and psychological and spiritual support for the children receiving treatment, as well as one of their family members. The nursing home, Hogar de Ancianos San Antonio, is also in need of some basic repairs and welcomes volunteers willing to help them provide the safest and most comfortable accommodations for its residents. Taking a break from his usual duties as our Senior Director, Robert spent the rest of his vacation helping the facility build a wall around the nursing home and installing screens on the perimeter of their eating hall to keep out flies during mealtimes.
At Access, we invested in an independent consultant to conduct face-to-face interviews and focus groups throughout our company, in addition to the survey on our benefits and working environment (i.e. our company’s vision, mission, purpose and core values). I personally opened nearly every focus group to ensure the Team Members that 1) our commitment to making improvements was genuine, 2) the process was strictly confidential, and 3) no subject, including compensation, was off limits. Since receiving our feedback, we shared it at the company’s annual leadership meeting, with over 150 Team Members in attendance, discussed it on a company-wide webinar with over 400 Team Members, and reviewed it in over 10 town hall meetings at different Access locations. What I’ve found is that a company’s culture has to have the right environment to improve; it can’t simply be forced to improve.
And it is with that spirit that our Phoenix Ops Team scheduled a day at the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course, bringing together both legacy Access and ASI acquired Team Members for a day of bonding outside of work. Members of the Transportation and Records Center Teams, along with General Manager Rich Alstedt and Supervisor Chris Nolan, tackled their fear of heights and other trepidations throughout an obstacle course divided into three sections by extreme zip lines. Sergio Breseño, Jamie Cruz, Daniel Ortiz, Chris Nolan, Archie Abad, Rich Alstedt, Mauricio Behena-Lopez, Laura Galvez, Rafael Mendez (background), Christian Borquez (foreground), Jose Ballesteros, Gilbert Gomez and David Perez (not pictured). The obstacle course (and much-needed lunch break) gave the participants a chance to discover what the different Teams do and how they fit together to provide a seamless customer service experience.
For every mile walked during the 6-week challenge, Access promised to donate $0.02 to the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation—and we are proud to announce that Team Members walked 92,291 miles, bringing our donation amount to $1,845.82. Mike Panciarelli came in first place with 361,129 steps, while Randy Lueallen logged the most steps in one week (108,431) and Krista Monaghan logged the most steps over Memorial Day weekend (36,076). Pulling Planes for the Special Olympics Access Denver took part in the Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) Plane Pull, meeting their goal of raising $2,970 by pulling a 164,000-pound airplane 12 feet across the tarmac in just over 8.6 seconds! Positively IMPRESSED Five Members of the Access Denver Team also volunteered their time to assist 150 Special Olympics athletes in the 2016 Mile High Regional Golf Competition.
