New phone scam targets seniors

We’ve started hearing about phone scams like this, which combine two scammer tricks: spear phishing and caller ID spoofing. And when they call or email with specific details about you — asking you to verify the information in full (things like your Social Security number or address) Here’s how you can avoid these scam tactics: * Don’t assume your caller ID is proof of whom you’re dealing with. Even if you didn’t give personal information to the scammer, report the scam to the FTC.

Are you ready for Winter Classes?

The coming Winter Quarter is full of ways to get your tech on no matter what your skill level – Senior Planet classes take all comers! Senior Planet offers a range of free 5- and 10-week digital technology courses that require advance registration, as well as weekly tech-themed events, workshops and lectures. Registration procedures, dates and times vary by location, so check the Senior Planet website here and find the location nearest you for the latest information on classes (usually, but not always, listed under the “Course Info” box, like here at the New York City Exploration Center.) No matter if you’re a beginner, moderately familiar or fully tech-savvy there’s always something else to know about how to use technology to transform and improve your life, meet new people and learn new skills.

A Holiday Message from Tom Kamber

When 2018 began, we thought it would be impossible to match the great success we achieved in the previous year. We trained nearly 5,000 members, launched six new courses, helped hundreds of members lose weight through Team Senior Planet, and achieved measurable decreases in social isolation for older adults in our communities. It’s hard to imagine reaching greater heights in 2019, but then again, that’s what we said last year! Note:  Senior Planet’s posts and the weekly Orbit will go on hiatus until January 2, 2019; please feel free to take a look at our archives.

#RaisingHell at Senior Planet

The event, moderated by OATS Executive Director and Founder Tom Kamber and co-hosted by Magnus, included Charlton Mcllwain, Vice Provost for Faculty Engagement and Development at NYU; Muriel Beach, a tireless activist for 70 years; groundbreaking TV producer Gilda Mirós; and author Frances Fox Piven, who served on the faculty of the Graduate Center of the City of New York. GIlda Mirós and Muriel Beach both pointed out that technology has changed the face of activism because it’s easier to reach younger people, who are tech-savvy. It is an honor to develop Senior Planet’s platform for positive social change and I can’t wait for the action that 2019 will bring for our Civic Engagement and Advocacy programming.
