Woods Valley Pond Skim 2019

Like many NY ski resorts, Woods Valley closed on Sunday. It was the 89th day of their 54th year and it was a good one

Wild Wings: Secret XC Stash in Peru VT

When I rolled into Wild Wings, half a dozen kids were taking turns skating down a hill in front of the base lodge and doing tricks off a berm at the edge of their parking lot. Located in Peru, VT, Wild Wings is just a bit far for a day trip, and I couldn’t seem to cobble together another weekend in that part of Vermont. The mountain ridge to our west (basically Styles and Peru Peak, connected by some high ground) helps protect us from the afternoon sun and warm west winds, helping us keep more snow during periods of warmer weather. I chatted with a family who’d skied Bromley the day before and were touring Wild Wings.

The Plattekill Plunge Army

On top of that, I’ve always had a thing for Plattekill’s Plunge. From the top, Plunge is often groomed about 60% of the way across starting from skier’s right. Every chance I got, I lobbied for Plunge and The Plattekill Plunge Army. On our next run on Plunge, the group wanted to stay on Giant Slalom, but I tried to tempt everyone back into the ungroomed bumps.

Whiteface: Springtime, Sunshine and Skyward!

Good old Gore and little Mount Peter are older but Whiteface’s Olympic legacy holds it’s own in the history category too. In the past, Junior had been unsure on Skyward and I wanted to ensure great condition for his first run. Due to the generosity of Johnnyonthespot, Junior was on some new-to-him racing skis and he put them to good use on Skyward, arcing big fast turns in the soft trenchable snow. In the past our trips to Whiteface have been either early or late season so having the whole mountain open to me was a bit of a novelty for me.
