In tandem with the Commemoration of 400 years of African impact that is taking place this year in the city of Hampton, let me share with you a few key places that I highly recommend visiting to hear and see the historic narrative. It is a new asset to Fort Monroe that will interpret the history of Fort Monroe from its first Native inhabitants to the first African arrival, the Civil War and beyond. Walk directly out the back door of the Hampton History Museum and you can visit St. John’s Church, the oldest continuous English-founded parish in the United States: The 400-year narrative from 1619 to the present is told in rich detail here. Captain Christopher Newport and Captain John Smith discovered and recognized the importance of Old Point Comfort (on the site of present-day Fort Monroe) for defense of the coast in that area. Then in August 1619, a Dutch ship arrived at Old Point Comfort with 30 enslaved Africans. The first enslaved Africans arrived right there, in Hampton? I will get the chance to visit (and revisit) some of the key historical places in Hampton which tie directly to the arrival of enslaved Africans on the shores of Virginia right there at Old Point Comfort.
