Additionally, volunteer work always looks great on a resume. Not many students will volunteer while abroad, so this is a great way to make your resume stand out. Not to mention, volunteer work abroad looks amazing for applicants to programs such as Fulbright or NSF GRFP, which both place heavy emphasis on community engagement and broader impacts. Spend a week here by marveling over the architecture, taking a boat tour of Lake Nicaragua, hiking one of the many surrounding volcanoes, and visiting a local coffee plantation to support sustainable travel and boost local economies. While cities like León and Granada will be full of tourists, Matagalpa will be a city you have to yourself. In cities like León and Granada, you will find many hostels to stay at, ranging from your relaxing stay to your party hostels. Add that to the fact that the car you rent likely won’t be in great condition, and I think it’s safe to say you should just ride the chicken bus.
An island country off the coast of Africa, Madagascar is the perfect off-the-beaten path country to visit for your next vacation! This beautiful island nation only brings in about 300,000 tourists a year, so it a great destination for those looking to get off-the-beaten path. The capital city of Antanarivo (pronounced on-tana-re-voo) is lively and unlike any other capital city in Africa. If you want to visit Madagascar but don’t know where to start, G Adventures and Intrepid Travel both have great small group tours that travel the country.
This means that my personal choice to commit to a vegetarian diet will never stop climate change, but it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try. You buying a shirt from a thrift store as opposed to an online, fast-fashion retailer may not save the world, but it could save one over-worked employee. This tip isn’t applicable for short trips, but if you are on a RTW trip, use hostels to swap clothing with other long-term travelers. Knowing how to travel sustainably won’t happen overnight, but I’m here to help on your journey to living a green life.
