On this historic day - the 59th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act - we witness another milestone in American democracy: Vice President Kamala Harris has announced Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election. This powerful convergence of past and present reminds us how far we’ve come, and the work still ahead. In a few weeks, I’ll be at the DNC as Harris and Walz address the Democratic Party on the world stage. Today’s announcement evokes my dad’s historic 1984 DNC speech during his first presidential run. He was the first African American to stand at a major party convention’s podium as a presidential candidate, and that year also saw the first woman recommended to share the ticket. Now, 40 years later, an African-American, Indian-American woman and daughter of immigrants is our Democratic presidential nominee. Dad’s words still resonate today: “No generation can choose the age or circumstance in which it is born, but through leadership, it can choose to make the age in which it is born an age of enlightenment, an age of jobs and peace and justice.” Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are the leaders destined for this moment, poised to address the issues he championed - from economic justice and international diplomacy to voting rights and bodily autonomy - which remain at the forefront of our national conversation. His challenge to Young America feels particularly poignant now: “Exercise the right to dream. Use hope and imagination as weapons of survival and progress. Use love to motivate you and obligate you to serve the human family. Choose the human race over the nuclear race. Bury the weapons, and don’t burn the people. Dream of a new value system!” As a “young American” myself, I’m eager to see how the Harris-Walz ticket will build on this legacy. As we mobilize to save democracy in the next 100 days, I reflect on the question posed by @ashleyjsharpton during our “Children of the Movement” panel at the National Action Network conference: “What advice would you give to those passionate about civil rights and making a difference?” My response calls to mind the wisdom shared by Vice President Harris in her viral “Coconut Tree Speech.” 🥥🌴 “My mother used to give us a hard time sometimes, saying, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.’” -@kamalaharris/@vp We have an opportunity to register a significant number of new voters in this election. How do we do it? Step one: by studying past efforts, both successful and unsuccessful—the “context.” In 1983, my father, @revjjackson, led a Southern Crusade voter registration drive through the South, engaging people county-by-county in areas rife with voter suppression. By the end of his 1984 presidential campaign, he had registered an impressive two million new voters—all without the help of social media. Today, with new technology, radical reimagining, and the power of #GenZ, we can build upon those efforts and make history together. #SwiftiesForHarris has developed an innovative plan: identifying voter registration requirements in every state where there’s a #TaylorSwift concert, creating QR codes with voter registration and donation links, and crafting “get out the vote” friendship bracelets. Every time I enter the White House, I am deeply moved by the fact that my ancestors — survivors of enslavement and unfathomable socio-political adversity — built the People's House. With each opportunity for a presidential candidate of color to reside on the White House grounds comes profound responsibilities — to honor the memories of our foremothers and forefathers and to uplift those historically disenfranchised in America. As a member of an African-American political family, I am particularly attuned to the "calling" of national servant-leadership from a marginalized perspective. Much like the presidential campaigns of my father and President Barack Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris' candidacy embodies all that has come before, what is, and what can become — the promise of a long sought-after American dream. Serving as a bridge between generations, I feel so connected to the hope in the air. These amendments: -Suggest 16 and 17-year-olds are not children needing protection -Soften punishments for perpetrators -Make prosecutions nearly impossible This hits close to home as a young Black woman.
