I’ve seen some of the best sunsets in Oahu over my many years of travelling to this beautiful part of the world and I’m sharing all my secrets on the best places to watch amazing Oahu sunsets. We arrived right on 6pm and had the weather been better we might have been treated to more spectacular views, but even in the best of conditions you would need to time it just right to see the sun slide behind the horizon between the buildings dotting Waikiki. Kaiaka Bay Beach Park is situated on Oahu’s North Shore and the easiest way to reach it is to drive yourself. Haleiwa Alii was the second stop on our quest to catch a decent sunset on the North Shore of Oahu and is just 5 minutes further along from Kaiaka Bay Beach Park.
My picks are the Spinach Stromboli from Sbarro (USD$7.99), the small Chicken Philly & Fries from Charley’s Philly Steaks (USD$6.49), the Elotes (Mexican corn on the cob) from Rainbow Burrito (USD$4.99), the Ham & Cheese Crepe (ask for it without the lettuce and mustard because that is just weird) from Islands Crepes (USD$9.49) and the Original Pretzel from Auntie Anne’s (USD$3.69). The Yellow Chicken Curry (USD$9.79) from the Curry Cafe, the signature single cheeseburger (USD$7.45) from Mahaloha Burger, the USD$7.59 Chicken Banh Mi (they call it a sandwich, but it sure looks like a Banh Mi to me!) from Pho Factory and the Stromboli (USD$6.79) from Sbarro all piqued my interest. There are a few items on the menu for under USD$10 including Single American Classic Burger (USD$8.99), Single Sukiyaki Burger (USD$9.99), Single Hawaiian BBQ Burger (USD$9.99), Chicken Karaage Sandwich (USD$9.99), Spam, Egg & Cheese Sandwich (USD$7.99) and three hot dogs between USD$6.99 – USD$7.99. Ono’s Burger Bar has two burgers on the menu for under USD$10, but Spitfire’s menu starts at USD$11 for a small Poke bowl.
The secret is to go at happy hour between 11am – 4.30pm where you can enjoy USD$12.95 lunch specials and a diverse happy hour menu that features USD$8 house wines and cocktails, beers between USD$5 – $6 and pupus between USD$8 – $12. The daily happy hour (2pm – 5pm) features USD$5 small plates, 3 varieties of USD$4 beers and 5 mixed drinks for USD$5 and under. The happy hour menu features small plates (USD$6 – $10), 3 cocktails (USD$7), house wines (USD$6), spirits (USD$6) and beer (USD$3 – $5). During happy hour (3pm – 6pm) selected pupus are between USD$7 – $12, 4 craft cocktails are USD$8, 4 draft beers are USD$5 and the house wine will set you back USD$8.
On my second trip I was a little bit more savvy about the best area to stay in Hoi An, but booking the perfect Hoi An hotel still takes time and patience. Deciding which is the best area to stay in Hoi An for you will depend on if you want to be close to town which boasts riverfront properties, some of the best restaurants in Hoi An and a vibrant shopping district or if you prefer to laze away the days on the sands of some of Vietnam’s best beaches. I find hotels in Hoi An are great value and you can secure a decent hotel room for around AUD$50 a night, budget hotels start from about AUD$25 a night, hostels will set you back around AUD$7 a bed, a room in a home stay starts at around AUD$20 a night and a suite with a private pool in a fancy resort can set you back in excess of AUD$1,500 a night. TTC Premium is located about a ten minute walk from ancient town, but our group mostly used taxis to get into town.
