This is a time of the year often marked by personal and professional transitions, a time of graduations, weddings, first-days-at-the-new-job, and strategic planning for the next fiscal year. Trying to think our way out of the crisis directs our attention, over and over, to thoughts and feelings that fuel the initial anxiety. We will not find all the answers to our questions about what is to come, but we will find greater self-discovery and an ability to direct our mind towards more calm, resilience, and focus. The good news is that we can train ourselves to rewire our default psychology and move through the threshold with greater self-awareness, focus, and resilience.
The up’s and down’s of the week look different for different people and are influenced, for better or worse, by a host of different factors. · When asked about the participants’ level of stress, only 20% said they are able to properly manage their stress levels during the work week. Those who managed to keep a healthy sleep routine throughout the week, especially on Thursday night, were 15% more focused and 12% better able to manage stress. With learnings from our client study, we have now enhanced our app to help others better understand how their minds work – at work.
When we asked the 5,000-person focus group to name what is not helpful to focus on right now, the list included the news, the uncertainty of the future, money and social media. Past research indicates that in times of uncertainty, people try to think their way out of their anxiety by following the news, obsessing over data, or interpreting social media posts. As companies intensely plan how to transition their operations and workforces to new realities, ignoring or avoiding discussions of employees’ mental states can come at a steep cost. Our client work has shown that creating even small, 10-minute opportunities for coming together and recharging our minds can alleviate anxious uncertainty and boost resilience and performance at work.
