New paintings by Columbus-based artist Christopher Burk (previously featured here). While Burk’s previous work focused on the everyday beauty found within the urban landscape, his latest series continues to explore images that have, sadly, become just as commonplace: “the visual imagery of a flood in this developing body of work has also become one of familiarity — whether or not you have been directly affected, this has become ordinary to us as viewers in the modern world. I’ve chosen to make the paintings even more minimal than they would if found be in the real world. See more images from “Floods” below or on display at Gallery 19 in Chicago from May 3 until June 28.
A collection of surreal and darkly stylized work by one of our favs, Japanese American artist, Esao Andrews (previously featured here). Presented by Thinkspace, “Petrichor” offers a mid-career retrospective for the Arizona native, showcasing over a dozen iconic works, never-before-seen sketches, skateboard decks and a site-specific mural
Our Feedback Club is an experiment we started a few months ago and the concept is simple: Members look at each other’s work and give honest feedback to one another — pointing out things that are working and most importantly things that are not. It can be tricky to take a step back and see your own work from the point of view of someone else and the goal of this club is to provide some outside perspective and constructive criticism in a safe environment. After we’ve compiled all the submissions we’ll send each participant a link to a feedback form to provide feedback for others. After all the forms are submitted each member will be emailed a PDF of the feedback written specifically to them from the other members of their group!
A new series of experimental oil paintings by Tel Aviv-based artists Tant, Deso and Unga aka Broken Fingaz Crew (previously featured here). Turning their attention inward, “Safe Troubles ” is an exploration of their personal surroundings, nomadic lifestyle, as well as the continuity and disconnection between western art history and the history of their own country. See more images below or on display at Varsi gallery until May 18th.
