Are you investing in your marriage the same way you invest in your career aspirations and personal goals? ✨ Pastor Kingsley (@kingsleypst) made a great point discussing the difference in what we pour into our aspirations with the effort we put into our marriages. He explained how an individual in medical school spends their time constantly learning, studying, and reviewing the material because they want to do well. ✨ Even years after graduating medical school and working as a physician, this doctor will continue to study in order to remain up-to-date on the changes and research in their field. Yet, would that same doctor commit to being a lifelong learner of their spouse and invest the needed time and care into the health of their marriage ? Often, the answer is no. ✨ The same level of attention and tenacity we use to ensure we are successful in our career, craft, and goals must be applied in our marriage. “We go to the altar to be altered” ~ @papa_4jays An altar is a structure that is used for sacrifices. It also serves as a place where things are changed or modified. It is therefore symbolic that an altar is also where couples stand before God to exchange vows and commit themselves to each other on their wedding day. ✨ There is a sacrifice that happens at the altar on our wedding day. It is there that a husband and wife vow to sacrifice self in exchange for oneness. They vow to forfeit the desires of the flesh that make us naturally selfish and commit to fulfilling the needs of each other, according to God’s Holy ordinance.

The responsibility of making a marriage work is on the two individuals who are in the marriage. One spouse is not more responsible than the other, nor is one spouse expected to carry hard season alone. Mark 10:9 says, “What God has put together, let no man put asunder,” a verse that many take as a warning to those who are outside of the wedding. Asunder, however, can be caused by the individuals who are in the marriage. A husband or wife who makes decisions that pull them apart or causes a divide puts the marriage asunder. ✨ Looking beyond a marriage ending, in divorce or separation, we are talking about the everyday choice we as married people make. @therealmarkgungor uses Proverbs 14:14 to paint a picture of the work required in marriage. As he eloquently puts it, "There is no such thing as a poo-free marriage. The problem is, many don't expect to find any poo at all in their marriage, and when they encounter stuff that stinks, they see it as a sign that they married the wrong person." ✨ Is it safe to say that there is no such thing as marrying the wrong person, but rather having the wrong mindset or expectations towards marriage? When we look through scripture, God does not tell us to find the "one" or, as defined by many, "soulmate." Instead, He provides an outline of how to live with the person we choose. In His divine plan, He knew that there would be challenges, especially since we live in a fallen world. For this reason, He gave us verses like Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 4:2, Ephesians 5:21-33, 1st Peter 3:7, 1st Peter 3:1-7. ✨ For couples going through a tough season, we believe that Christ can restore what the locust has eaten (Joel 2:25) if we return our hearts and marriage to him. Marriage is a choice we must make every day. Yes, even those days when we do not “feel” like being married, don’t want to submit or sacrifice. All of us at one point in time have experienced the harsh reality of other people not minding their own marriage or wombs. Often the result of this is mass gossiping, which is not only hurtful but damaging. When we don't mind our own marriage and womb, we end up: ✨Making comments based on inaccurate or limited information and as a result form opinions and judgments based on biased or erroneous information. ✨If not careful, we may be tempted to pass along information that should be prayed about more than gossiped about. ✨Asking questions such as, are you pregnant? Why haven’t you had a baby, it’s x, number of years? Which may be hurtful especially for couples in waiting. ⁣ In 2010 I attended a marriage seminar. The speaker was someone I looked up to and tagged their marriage as #goals. The room was packed with mostly single people eager to one day get married and a few married couples who were there to "learn" something new. During the questions segment of the seminar, a lady stood up. She asked why it was necessary to pray and seek counseling before getting married. In her thinking, as long as they loved each other, nothing else mattered ✨ The married couples in the room laughed, some to the point of tears. Confused, she sat down and awaited a response or insight as to why the room was filled with laughter. The speaker picked up the mic, sighed deeply, and said, "because your marriage could either send you to heaven or hell." He explained both the good and bad things that could happen in a marriage. He made us understand that it takes grace, prayer, repentance, and forgiveness to make a marriage work. What are you willing to sacrifice, so your ram can appear? 💕Friendship 💕Job 💕Lifestyle 💕Decision 💕*insert any other sacrifice* I can only imagine how Abraham must have felt when God asked him to sacrifice the one thing he undoubtedly loved, Isaac. Abraham had another child, Ishmael, his first son. So why didn’t God ask for him instead of Isaac? ✨ Isaac was the child God promised Sarah and Abraham, the child that was conceived way past the “ideal” child bearing age. He was the long awaited, answered prayer. Yet fully aware of the significance of this child, God asked that Abraham sacrifice him. In the end, we learn that God provided a ram in the place of Isaac after Abraham’s obedience. ✨ The hard question we need to ask ourselves is: what are we willing to sacrifice to make our marriage work? For some couples, sacrifice may mean sacrificing their career for a season or forever. It may mean sacrificing the comfort of your home to move your in-laws in. It could even be the sacrifice of following your spouse despite some uncertainty because they’ve not given you a road map. ✨ Sacrifices are not easy, so often times if your sacrifice feels easy, then it’s not a sacrifice. At times, sacrifices leave you feeling great internal and external conflict. It may even feel like an ultimatum because the sacrifice may seem to threaten the safety/security of your marriage, but out of obedience you follow through because you understand this is the decision your marriage needs you to make. ✨ Sacrifice bridges the conflict or gap between our own self-interest and the interest of our partner.
