Firisua was the first ever Pacific woman to compete in the marathon event at the Tokyo Olympics and came in a 72. Firisua failed to qualify for Paris in her the marathon distance and Solomon Islands was given a universality place (which are spots given to generally small countries to increase the diversity and gender balance of participating nations) for the 100m sprint, so they gave it to Firisua instead of their leading sprinter Jovita Arunia, who has a personal best of 12.87. Firisua ultimately ran the heat in 14.31 seconds and failed to qualify for the next round. Some insiders suggested Firisua was given the spot as a “farewell gift” before she retires from professional competition. 4️⃣ It’s Cape Verde’s 8th games and they’re set to win their first Olympics medal. David De Pina is a boxer in the men’s 51kg division. 5️⃣ Julien Alfred beat Sha’Carri Richardson for gold in the 100m sprint.
