Goodbye from Rarely Wears Lipstick

I’ve been writing online since 2002, but this blog began back in March 2003 as a somewhat unstructured collection of personal thoughts on a vanity domain. Back then, my blog posts were rather like long form versions of my tweets but a few years writing for online women’s magazine BitchBuzz helped to hone my writing skills and also created a desire to change my blog’s format. I celebrated a decade of blogging in 2013 with the Rarely Wears Lipstick Awards which provided an excuse to celebrate the talents of some rather wonderful people and to gather together many of the fabulous folk I’ve met in the course of my online writing career. It was started as a personal blog by Lori Smith in 2003, was rebranded to Rarely Wears Lipstick in 2009, and finally closed its doors in 2019.

Taking time out for… reading

I used to read a lot of fiction. As a child I would power through books in a way that only a kid who lived opposite a library could in the 1980s

The smile-inducing magic of tidying your wardrobe

If this semi-regular clearout is not something you usually do, it’s actually a great thing to tackle in January when the daylight hours are short and everyone’s looking to make a fresh start at something. Stuff to get rid of should be anything that doesn’t fit (and can’t be altered to fit), anything that is no longer your style, and anything you’re just not going to wear again. If you’re keeping something for sentimental value rather than because you’re going to wear it, you should pack it away carefully rather than store it with your everyday clothing.) If you can’t instantly think of friends who might want to give some of it a new home, there are some great suggestions in Tamsin Blanchard’s recent article for The Pool entitled ‘

Review: Latex lingerie from Honour

I haven’t written about latex much since my 2012 post in the fabulous fashion fabrics series, so I was surprised when the lovely folk at Honour got in touch to ask if I’d like to review a lingerie set from their website. I usually avoid buying bras that are sized this way as, if it fits across my boobs, it’s probably going to be too loose underneath them, and if it’s nice and snug under the boobs, I’ll either be spilling out everywhere or will be smooshed flat. After browsing the latex bras on the Honour website to see if there were any styles that might work a bit better, I found a few that use a buckle fastening which gives a bit more flexibility on the underbust fit. If the ‘Starbust’ bra had been available with an adjustable back, this may have been the solution, but I’m guessing either style would probably work better if you usually wear a B, C or D cup bra.
