BOOK REVIEW: THINKING ON MY FEET, KATE HUMBLE > SPLODZ BLOGZ

Kate Humble is best known for presenting wildlife and science programmes on the tellybox such as Animal Park and Springwatch (and Top Gear, of course). She comes across as an always-smiling jolly person who loves wildlife and nature and all things outdoors

EXOTOGG THERMAL TABARD > SPLODZ BLOGZ

Exotogg is a thermal vest designed for bikers, backpackers, skiers, horse riders, fishermen, and anyone else who spends time outside in winter doing activities that don’t necessarily heat you up from the inside. And it did indeed work, I can’t deny that, and wouldn’t begin to argue with the science of our own warm breath doing its thing to warm up the body’s core through this life-jacket looking product. Having the Exotogg meant that I could very easily add air to warm up my core when I needed it the most, and take it out again when I didn’t. Secondly, while I do think the sleeveless design works because it keeps you able to move around fully, it would be good to see a version with some microfleece sleeves added so I don’t have to wear an additional layer under the Exotogg to keep my arms warm – or even something that looks a bit like a down jacket but that uses air in the body rather than fluff.

A MEMORY FILLED CAMPERVAN ROAD TRIP WITH GOBOONY > SPLODZ BLOGZ

I’m told that in order to fulfil a dream you must take baby steps in its general direction every single day, and because the vanlife one has been a little elusive over the years, I decided to make a concerted effort this year by adding “spend the night in a campervan” to my 38 Things For 38 Years list. Using this opportunity with Goboony to revisit some of those places seemed like an excellent use of this weekend road trip, and so we chose to base ourselves at Bude, Princetown and Budleigh Salterton on our three nights away from home. I’ve got another post coming soon which speaks about how my big bucket list item of owning a campervan has changed (and hasn’t changed) now that I’ve actually slept in one and driven one, but in the mean time I will simply say that the dream of camping in a van is still alive and well for me. Goboony got in touch to offer me the hire of this campervan for free in order to help me tick two things off my 38 Things for 38 Years list, and I am unbelievably grateful for that opportunity.

USEFUL (AND NOT SO USEFUL) CAMPING GADGETS > SPLODZ BLOGZ

It even comes with a USB powered light to illuminate your cook top for a camp kitchen that’s good even when it’s dark. It is super light (the marketing material says it weighs the same as three eggs…), folds down to pack away easily, and because of the dual-purpose with the battery charger sounds like it’s probably a good little gadget to consider. The Water to Go Bottle is one such product, eliminating 99.9% of microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source in the world to provide clean, safe water to drink. Something I might actually purchase for future camping trips to save the bother of refilling my small water bottle over and over again, this Colapz Water Carrier that doubles as a bucket does appear very useful.
