Hi, I'm Raphael. Join me as I share stories from my travels and tips on how you can travel on a budget as well!
Although I didn’t spend a lot of time in Tulum, only one full day in fact, somehow I still remember it as one of my favorite places in the three months I spent abroad. They can make a shitty place seem great or a great place seem shitty. The city is quite small and if I am completely honest, the city itself didn’t impress me too much. When we finally arrived at the cenote after riding the bike through the hot Mexican sun, we were told that the entrance fee would be $300 MXN.
The city was nice, the hostel was good and the people I met there were cool. The tourism board of Mérida also offers free walking tours which are really nice if you’d like to get some additional info on the city and its history. It’s also a very good way to save money on food if you can have a big breakfast in the morning and maybe skip lunch. The main square is a good bet if you are looking for good and cheap food but there are many food carts in other streets around too.
While it’s not part of Central America, it was a great place to start my trip, mostly because the flights from Europe to Cancún were very cheap. And since this was my first time in Mexico I felt like I didn’t like Mexico. As soon as I left Cancún though, I was relieved to learn that I just didn’t like Cancún, but Mexico is in fact amazing! I left Cancún for a short trip to Isla Mujeres and then went further up to Isla Holbox.
I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve and not too bad of a hangover today. And while that means that I won’t be able to travel as much as last year, I already have a trip planned. This is my one and only New Year’s resolution, to see more of Switzerland. Get ready to read a lot about Central America, Switzerland, Namibia and Botswana in the coming months.
