Everyone plays a role in mitigating long-term effects of healthcare workplace violence

Earlier this year, our team at the University of Washington completed a study on successful coping strategies for healthcare providers who have been the victims of workplace violence—often at the hands of the patients they’re treating. The research uncovered actionable ways healthcare organizations can support their staff to mitigate the long-term effects of workplace violence on the individuals’ psyches. Many of the healthcare workers in the study—nurses, physicians and hospital security teams—felt that workplace violence was an inevitable and unpreventable part of the job. Training staff to participate in peer-to-peer debriefings opens up support for those who work nontraditional hours—which is when these incidents of violence are most likely to occur.

Most healthcare organizations have suffered data breaches, survey shows

While healthcare organizations spent more on information technology from 2016 to 2017, the number of cyberattacks also increased, according to a new survey from the Ponemon Institute. The healthcare organizations surveyed experienced an average of 16 cyberattacks each in 2017, up from 11 the year before, with the majority of respondents saying patient data had been breached or lost in the last year. Healthcare organizations with chief information security officers and incident response plans fared the best with these costly threats. But just 15% of that budget is spent on information security, according to the survey of healthcare IT and IT security staff.
