Dance Dispatches celebrates global dance traditions and communities of dance enthusiasts and professionals alike. We write about all dance genres, including ballet, modern dance, hip-hop and ballroom. But our show reviews, class reviews and news pieces cover folk dance traditions from around the world, such as Argentine tango, K-pop and Japanese traditional dance.
The lifestyle section covers cross-training, spa, food and drink, dance and athleisure wear, and travel.
Today, Heidi shares both her knowledge of soft shoe dances and hard shoe dances with students Heidi structured the class, so that we could embody and compare the funky old-style Sean-nós groove with the polished present-day Irish step dancing style. However, there are some dancers that are interested in reviving the Sean-nós Irish dance style, and other dancers that want to learn historic choreographies that are not currently eligible in Irish dancing competitions. Physical intensity: 3 / 5 – but only because the dancing was spaced out between discussion points and mini-demonstrations Most challenging moment: trying to assume the cool, laidback Sean-nós (or “old style”) step dance style – since I really enjoy the lighter, competition style Best moment: dancing with the music –
Our online dance club members voted to learn this fun dance style, so we invited Ayesha Khanna of Bollywood Funk NYC to lead a class and teach us about the cultural dance. Before we started the choreography, Ayesha explained that Bollywood dancing comes from “Bollywood” – the Hindi film industry that is based in Mumbai, India. Learn more about Bollywood dance and representations in American media in our interview with Joya Kazi, who choreographed a Bollywood number in Mindy Kaling’s Although Ayesha ran an exclusive class, just for our Dance Dispatches Social Club members, you can learn from her and other Bollywood Funk instructors via their #BFunkNYCDigital hub.
We invited Krysten Resnick of the London School of Hula and ‘Ori (LSHO) to lead our very first Dance Dispatches Social Club online dance class. She taught us about how Tahitian dance intertwines with other aspects of Tahitian culture, a few fundamental hip motions (of the ōte’a style) and some graceful storytelling gestures (of the ‘aparima style) during our bespoke 90-minute workshop. First, she reiterated that ‘Ori Tahiti (Tahitian dance) comes from the islands of Tahiti – while Hula comes from the islands of Hawaii – and showed us the instruments that accompany both. We kept our hips swaying as we moved through the gestures, and although the movement was quite simple (not easy, but simple in comparison to other Tahitian dance movements), for brief moments I did feel like I was actually dancing to the music – instead of just going through the motions.
You feel like everyday life is wearing you out to the point where you just want to spend your free time scrolling through social media or smashing another television series. How to step up your game: You can’t dance if you aren’t willing to engage with dance. You don’t want to put yourself out there because you’re worried about how you’ll look and what others will think of you. You’ve determined the reasons that you’re reading this article instead of doing what you actually love – which is dancing!
When I stopped dancing, I intended to pick it up again. I thought I'd get back to it when I resumed 'normal life' in the US. But my *actual* life got in my way, including a shoulder dislocation, two transcontinental moves and a wedding. I moved on with another career because I had completely lost my confidence. When I finally made it to London after a year and a half of not training, I felt rusty and hopeless and made excuse after excuse to stay away from the dance studio. It was too much of a hassle to take class afterwork. The classes were too expensive. Heck, even my train ticket to and from classes was too expensive. I didn't know what to wear. I didn't have friends to chat with beforehand – or to stretch with afterwards. I didn't know if I could pick up the choreography. I was out of shape. And a million other things. But I still dream about dance. Regularly. I dream I'm at dance festivals or that I'm back in the studio with my favorite choreographers. I even dream that I ‘turn’ into a pirouette pro and know exactly how to adjust my body to complete 12+ revolutions. (Alas, when I wake and test out my newfound knowledge, it doesn't quite carry over.) It’s been half a decade, and I’m done missing dance. So, I’m trading my inner angst for excitement because I'm cooking up a social club – just for women who love to dance! It will best suit recreational dancers, so if you can relate, this is for you. 😄 The club will host monthly live online events and connect you with an ultra-supportive, motivating dance posse. If you’re a lady and this resonates, check it out because you are so welcome to join. www.dancedispatches.com/dance-dispatches-social-club (Link also in bio.) Most of us fell in love with dance as children. We'd dress up in leotards to attend class a few times a week – or we'd treasure the dance units in public school gym class (because dance > sports, amirite?). Others of us fell in love with dance as an extracurricular activity during high school. (Dance team, anyone?) Or perhaps even during university with a college club or two. (One of these was likely related to ballroom or social dancing.) Thank goodness dance isn't just for professionals. And thank goodness recreational dance isn't just for kids and students. Can I get a 'heck yea' if you believe dance is for everyone? Adults dance, too, darn it. And if you're an adult that's looking to fit more dance in your life, then join this challenge for busy adults. You'll dance with us 10 min/day for 5 days because it makes you happy. You don't have to be in top physical condition or have a 'steel trap' memory to pick up difficult choreography. You also don't need to spend an hour recording a 30-second snippet on TikTok. We're just going to have some fun because it's about time! Join here: https://dancedispatches.com/5-day-dance-challenge . (Or click the link in our bio to sign up.) Then bring your friends, who will enjoy a dance pick-me-up. We are adults, hear us roar, see us dance! #dancedispatches #adultdancecommunity #adultdancers #adultsdancetoo #dancechallenge
"Emotions well up and surge through my soul like waves as I perform [the 'Table of Silence' 9/11 project]. I go on a spiritual and emotional journey from the horror and chaos of the attack to the rescue effort at Ground Zero to the unity and love that transpired in NYC and across our nation after the fact. It has come to mean much more to me over the years, as the message of hope and peace is not only about 9/11 but also responds to every human struggle, pain, prejudice, war, injustice and trial we deal with as a human race." - Shaun Parry www.dancedispatches.com/table-of-silence-911-dance-tribute-nyc Photo credit: Paul B Goode . . . . . #dancedispatches @buglisidance @lincolncenter #911 #911memorial #911tribute #neverforget #neverforget911 #danceforpeace #peacedance
"As a Buglisi Dance Theatre company member, I have been an assistant rehearsal director for ['Table of Silence'] since its inception. It felt amazing to be creating a piece that was to bring together over 100 dancers, musicians, and artists, to promote peace and healing on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks." - Lauren Marie Jaeger www.dancedispatches.com/table-of-silence-911-dance-tribute-nyc Photo credit: Paul B Goode . . . . . #dancedispatches @buglisidance @lincolncenter #911 #911memorial #911tribute #dancenyc #neverforget911 #danceforpeace #nycdancers

Spain is famous for flamenco, but Seville is especially well-known for this dance style. We went there at the beginning of the year, and our favorite performance was at the Museo del Baile Flamenco, Cristina Hoyos, Sevilla. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ www.dancedispatches.com/flamenco-dance-museum-show-seville-spain #dancedispatches @museodelbaileflamenco #museodelflamenco #museodelbaileflamenco #flamenco #flamencodancer #flamencodress #flamencodance #flamencopassion #flamencosevilla #sevilla #seville #sevillespain

Can you tell which dance this is from the photo? Hint: take a look at the instrument in the background. It's a bandoneon, which is commonly associated with the... Argentine tango! I got to sample a teeny bit of the Argentine tango in Buenos Aires, and there are three *very* different types of places you can experience the dance. See our blog for more: https://dancedispatches.com/argentine-tango-buenos-aires-venues/ Have you tried tango – Argentine or other? Tell us about in the comments.
