It was the last day of the KRTU Membership Drive, though it’s not like we shut down the website and aren’t taking donations anymore, just sayin’. In that regard, the show is still bringing the newness as it should and I tried to impress as always by doing what I try to do best
Bassist and composer Billy Mohler graduated from the Berklee College of Music and then proceeded to join the Monk Institute, as one of only five musicians, where he studied and performed with jazz superstars Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry, and Jimmy Heath, just to name a few. But jazz wasn’t in the cards for Mohler who found unexpected success with rock band The Calling launching him into a career in pop and rock music
Last year, guitarist Gilad Hekselman released Ask for Chaos, an album so full of great ideas it required two different bands — his gHex Trio and his ZuperOctave — to convey them all. There were so many ideas, they couldn’t even be all held on one album, so Hekselman is releasing an EP of B-sides, Further Chaos, on May 10th
One of the finest piano/bass/drums trio of the Western Hemisphere, Phronesis, have been touring through Europe lately, uniting together again after taking some time for assorted solo work and finding that magic together once again. Fortunately, the Dutch club Bimhuis recorded their March 30th set in Amsterdam and it’s the contemplative build one would expect from these guys
