Let's talk about SEALS! These adorable dogs-of-the-ocean as I like to call them are very prominent around Antarctica. There are five main types of seals in the Antarctic - Weddel, Fur, Crabeater, Elephant, and Leopard. . The Antarctic fur seal (pic 1) is believed to be the most populous type of fur seals with 95% of their population calling South Georgia their home. 😍 . The Weddel seal (pic 2 & 3) spend much of their time underneath the ice. They also have the southernmost range of any seal. 🥰 . The Crabeater seal (pics 4-6) actually don't eat crabs 💁‍♀️ they eat krill. The name refers to their finely lobed teeth. . The only time we saw a leopard seal was when we were kayaking. Those are the most dangerous seal and have been known to kill humans. 😟 While I am confident in my kayaking abilities, once he went under water, I was a bit scared of tipping the kayak! . You know who is REALLY bad at social distancing? Penguins! They really don't get the whole "6 feet apart" thing and aren't really clean. See that pink stuff on the rocks in pic 2? Yeah, that's penguin poop. If they just stayed further apart, maybe they wouldn't be so smelly. 🤣💁‍♀️ . They are adorable though! 🥰😍 . Antarctica is more than just snow! There are a number of places that have limited snow in the summer. This is Neptune's window on Deception Island. According to the fitbit, the hike to the window was about 1.5 miles one way from where I'm standing. When there aren't landmarks like trees or houses, places feel deceptive close. Hiroshima - a bustling city - more than just the Atomic Bomb. the Atomic Bomb Dome was one of the most powerful buildings I have ever seen. The Dome was originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall and was located near the bomb's hypocenter. While most of the other buildings in Hiroshima were demolished, this building was preserved so that the world can never forget the tragedy of August 6, 1945. . . At the Children's Peace Monument in #Hiroshima, Japan, you'll find a statue of Sadako Sasaki holding a wire crane. According to Japanese legend, if you create 1,000 cranes, then you are granted one wish. Sadako achieved this in August 1955, before her death in October 1955. She died of leukemia from the atomic bomb dropped on August 6, 1945. Her wish? To live in a world without nuclear weapons. The Children's Peace Monument is in honor of all the children who died because of the bomb. People still send cranes of all different color, sizes and patterns, with their own messages of hope for world peace. . Hiroshima Castle! One of the most impressive highlights from this city was the castle! The castle is different from many castles since it is built on a plain in the center of the city as opposed to on a hilltop or mountaintop. It was built in 1589 by the feudal lord Mori Terumoto. It was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945. . It was rebuilt with a partially wooden exterior thirteen years after the bombing. It is an informative museum that boasts panoramic views from the top. This was my favorite memorial in #Hiroshima. The Cenotaph is an arch that was designed to represent ancienty Japanese clay houses to shelter the souls of the victims of the first A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.When looking through the cenotaph, you can see the eternal flame of hope and the Atomic Bomb Dome in the background. (2nd photo is a close up of the Dome, 3rd are cranes made from people from around the world at the Children's Peace Memorial as a symbol of solidarity).
