When I visited the @auchentoshan Distillery in March, Neil Matthew, the Visitor Centre Assistant Manager gave us one of the best tours I have ever witnessed. His vibe, knowledge and storytelling abilities were top notch. Then I came across this photo just 10 minutes ago. Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender of @suntorywhisky watching and listening to Neil very carefully as he was telling us about the different casks used to age Auchentoshan. The best tasting I had in the last months was at @glengariochmalt last month. It was mot about the tasting room, which was above the malting floor, casual and heates with space heaters, nothing luxurious. It was about the SPIRIT and the PEOPLE. We tasted four different new make spirits from 2014 to 2022, a period when Glen Garioch played around with distillation techniques. We started with 2014 when indirect fire was used, then 2020 just before the refurbishment with lower mash size and longer fermentation period. 2021 sample showed us the impact of direct fire and 2022 brought in the distinct impact of floor malting. This time I have Roaming Man Batch 10 Tennessee Rye Whiskey in my glass. My latest review on their whiskies was on Roaming Man Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey Batch 9. The nose has intense toasted oak with cardamom, dusty malt, pleasant spearmint, grapefruit zest and cinnamon, Nose starts hot for a single second, then it develops into a fresh but dark one. Roaming Man Batch 10 was certainly not the wildest rye whiskey in its range, but it was a very well-balanced and delicious one!
The baking spices and minerals continue to pull forward, but the profile is still every bit sweet and creamy with vanilla wafers. Strength is reaching towards medium plus and body finishes the same medium. I loved the sweet and creamy pastry-like vanilla wafers note. The VegaFina 1998 VF 50 is not a complex cigar, but one of those cigar experiences where it makes you nod your head a couple times and say, “man, that was good.
Nothing better than sitting with friends on a Saturday afternoon and casually tasting a $6000 Japanese whisky, and then lighting some Cuban sticks sound heavenly right? 18 Mizunara Cask 2017 is the third in this range, Master Blender Shinji Fukuyo showcases the impact of Mizunara oak barrels, aged between 18 to 50 in this luxurious single malt. Mizunara oak is known for way more delicate flavors like sandalwood, aloe wood, coconut burst and subtle spice notes. Yamazaki 18 Mizunara Cask 2017 Edition is a good whisky showing qualities of Mizunara oak, that is all, at least for me.
Paul John Mithuna is matured in 1st fill American virgin oak and then finished in 1st I love how Paul John's Christmas Edition bottles are indicating their new bottles such as Paul John Oloroso Select Cask and Paul John PX Select Cask. Sultana grapes, stone fruits, oak spices develop into milk chai, cocoa, oak tannins and most interestingly white Pineau des Charentes. Aging the whisky primarily in American virgin oak brings out that crazy and strong character and the gentle ex-bourbon finish shows the boundaries to create a great balance.
