Often it feels like we’re not working from home, we’re living at work. It’s important to give employees the flexibility to structure their day in a way that works with their new living/working arrangements. Flexible work hours, measuring performance based on output vs. time spent, and encouraging people share their lives, kids (whether intentional or not), and pets are all helpful. Be sure to provide praise and recognition to team members, inform other groups about progress made or projects completed, and congratulate each other for just showing up.
A recently disclosed vulnerability (CVE-2021-3156) in the popular Linux Sudo package could allow a malicious user to gain privileged root access on affected systems. The vulnerability uses a “Heap-based Buffer Overflow” exploit to allow a specific set of commands to gain root access. The vulnerability has not been rated with a CVSSv3 score, but due to the number of systems affected worldwide, it is imperative that organizations patch as soon as possible. Patches for older versions have been released and/or backported for Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, and CentOS Stream 8.
These attacks have been linked to a series of exploits of the SolarWinds® Orion® IT Monitoring Platform. Sometime in early 2020, a breach of the supply-chain side of the SolarWinds® Orion® IT Monitoring Platform resulted in the introduction of malicious code. If your organization is using the SolarWinds® Orion® IT Management Platform, we urge you to immediately review the CISA ED, located here: https://www.cisa.gov/news/2020/12/13/cisa-issues-emergency-directive-mitigate-compromise-solarwinds-orion-network The CISA ED advises an immediate shutdown of the SolarWinds® Orion® IT Management Platform and partnering with an organization that conducts incident response to identify the impact.
The downside of scaling up The ability to quickly and easily provision resources (either automatically or manually) in the cloud is one of the most famous cloud benefits. People often leverage this ability to address performance issues or sudden increases in demand reactively. You don’t even realize that there’s a performance issue to fix — or that fixing it would mean needing fewer resources altogether. See how having a thoughtful cloud assessment has already unlocked a wiser path forward for companies like Florence Corporation, New Relic, and FreshBooks.
