#ad When they say âwaterfront viewâ at Diamondâs Edge Restaurant, they mean it. At this exquisite dining venue on Great Diamond Island, Maine, you can enjoy the island breeze just steps from the shore. And the food and drink are just as spectacular as the view! I quenched my summer thirst with a Casco Bay Sunrise. This tasty cocktail of silver Tequila, Grand Marnier, sparkling pink grapefruit, and lime is smooth and refreshing. The menu at Diamondâs Edge includes fresh seafood, New England classics, and meat and vegetarian dishes. All are creatively prepared and presented. For starters, I chose the Peeky Toe Crab Cake. Prepared with citrus aioli, gazpacho vinaigrette, and pea shoot & radish salad, it did not disappoint. This patty was packed with fresh crabmeat and expertly seasoned and plated. Next, I opted for the Bronzed Diver Scallops with a Lemon-Caper Butter Sauce. A tantalizing dish served with Maine potatoes and fresh asparagus was pure perfection! Though the restaurant was full, I did not feel rushed, and relaxed after dinner in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the harbor. Itâs true, there arenât a lot of restaurants in Diamond Cove. But in no way is it slim pickings. In addition to Diamondâs Edge Restaurant, you can dine at The Crown Jewel, the General Store, or at the Lobby Bar + Cafe and Cabana Bar at the Inn at Diamond Cove. All of them are excellent. But people ferry over from Portland to enjoy a waterfront dinner at Diamondâs Edge Restaurant. Itâs not hard to understand why. Just be sure to make reservations ahead of time. And if you happen to be arriving by boat, you can reserve a slip in the marina while you dine, too. #ad My deluxe accommodations at the Inn at Diamond Cove felt more like a chic apartment space than a hotel room. That's in part because Diamond Cove is a beautifully reinvented island community. You'll find this small island in Casco Bay, off the coast of Portland Maine. The buildings once served as army barracks for historic Fort McKinley. The island's history explains the balconied brick homes youâll see as you approach the inn by golf cart. My stay at the Inn at Diamond Cove afforded me a comfortable living area, large bedroom, and spacious bathroom. Natural light pours through the roomâs large windows, outfitted with room-darkening shades. High ceilings and rich wood floors make the rooms both airy and warm. In the living area, youâll find a comfy seating arrangement, a TV, and a kitchenette. Itâs stocked with a small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, dishes, and cutlery. (This is perfect for a night in with someone special!) The bedroom features the innâs signature pillow-topped mattress, luxurious sheets, another TV and comfortable chair, and plenty of space to unpack your luggage. A granite-top vanity, glass-enclosed shower with rain head, and vintage-style tiled floors graced the extra-large bathroom. Each day, I ventured out to explore the trails, shops, restaurants, and historic sites on the island. Then, I dined alongside the peaceful waterfront. But I truly loved returning to these beautiful quarters at dayâs end. The Inn at Diamond Cove is family-friendly with a heated pool and fat-tire bike rentals â even an old-fashioned bowling alley next door. In addition, the inn offers luxury condos and suites with fireplaces and balconies, connecting accommodations, and ADA/accessible rooms. What a cool place! #ad I rode in style from Bug Light Park in Portland Maine to Great Diamond Island aboard âThe Gizzy.â It's one of Foggâs Water Taxiâs fleet. This sleek blue 27â Cuddy Cabin is perfect for small charters (like mine), with a canvas cover and comfortable seating. It also has a classic wood interior. Foggâs has a range of boats at your service, from a catamaran for up to 49 people to a flat-bottomed beach shuttle. I was delighted by the private ride. The sea captain helped me aboard, and off we went! Along the way to our destination, we passed Fort Gorges, Little Diamond Island, Peaks Island, lighthouses, and plenty of beautiful sailboats, speedboats, and ferries. The captain navigated with ease and confidence. We hustled along the waterways from Portland Maine to Diamond Cove, and in just 15 minutes, arrived. (The ferry from Portland can take as long as 45 minutes.) As a guest of The Inn at Diamond Cove, I explored much of the 1.3-acre island. It's a private residential community typically off-limits to the public. Also as a guest of the inn, I was able to park my car at Bug Light Park for a nominal fee. I wouldnât be needing it at Diamond Cove since the islanders rely on golf carts to get around. And thatâs how I was received at the dock - The Inn at Diamond Cove arranged for a complimentary ride by golf cart. They delivered me and my bags to what I know now would be a lovely stay at an exclusive inn on a tranquil, private island off the coast of Maine. <3 What an amazing way to start my trip! When you want to find out the best place to catch a beautiful sunset, ask a local. Thatâs what I did when I was in New Hampshireâs Mount Monadnock region. At dinner, I met several locals in Peterborough who offered their best ideas, all within 15-20 minutes away from my accommodations at Jack Daniels Inn. Among them: Dublin Pond, Dear Wilson Inn, Temple Mountain, Pack Monadnock, and Cathedral of the Pines. The closest and most appealing choice to me was a short drive to a farmland scene on high. This little known spot is just over the border in Jaffrey, NH. The route took me up a winding country road that turned to gravel as I neared the top just before sunset. Youâll know youâve arrived at the right place because there are a few small pull-offs in the road. Otherwise, the place is deserted. Here, across a beautiful clearing, is the farmland, complete with silos and livestock fencing. Itâs a classic New England scene. đ And you canât miss majestic Mount Monadnock on the horizon. Whether youâre hoping to snap a beautiful sunset photo or just enjoy the moment with someone you love - this view wonât disappoint! Just be sure to check your weather app for the current sunset time. I imagine all of the options shared with me were wonderful places to see the sun set over the mountains. But this place was truly magical. Even better that so few know about it. #ad The Jack Daniels Inn in Peterborough NH hugs the Contoocook River. Just 1.5 hours from Boston, it's the perfect place for a New Hampshire getaway. Not only was my room spotless and comfortable, but the new owners recently upgraded the property. The decor is bright and airy with New England charm. My deluxe king room was quite large, too! Room darkening curtains and shades afforded privacy and a sound sleep. I savored morning coffee made with the in-room Keurig machine (Starbucks--yes!), and the microwave and fridge were convenient, too. In addition, guests are welcome to complimentary beverages, snacks, cereal, fruit, and yogurt, and to use the gourmet coffee machine in reception. The staff was always so friendly and made helpful suggestions about what to see and do in the area - always a plus. That's because The Jack Daniels Inn is an excellent home base to explore Mount Monadnock, covered bridges, blueberry picking, hiking, biking, canoeing, and more. It's just a mile to Peterboroughâs downtown with its unique shops, eateries, a spa, and other services. But what really impressed me about the Jack Daniels Inn was the in-room technology: âď¸ High-speed internet âď¸ A large flat screen smart TV with premium channels âď¸ Extra outlets throughout the room âď¸ A handy QR code with hotel info and local attractions âď¸ Contactless check-in/-out âď¸ Even voice-enabled Alexa! At day's end, the Adirondack chairs nestled beneath shade trees were ideal for relaxing by the water. I couldnât have been happier staying in this pristine, affordable New England setting for the weekend. If you want to escape to the peaceful, outdoor lifestyle in New Hampshire, I know youâll be as happy staying at The Jack Daniels Inn as I was. #visitnewhampshire #visitnh #peterboroughnh #jackdanielsinn #visitnewengland #weekender #weekenderhotels #weekend #vacation #getaway #monadonockregion #newhampshire #enjoytravellife #sponsoredtravel #presstrip #optoutside #newhampshireoutdoors #monadnock #hotel #hospitality #hotellife #relax #nature #hotelroom #mynewengland #explore #river #inn #hospitality
The last thing you would expect to find at the top of a mountain in NH is an open-air cathedral. And yet, there it is. Cathedral of The Pines features the most beautiful garden paths and views of Mount Monadnock, set within the property's 236 acres. This beautiful stop in Rindge, New Hampshire was just a short ride from my home base at the Jack Daniels Inn in Peterborough. This is a perfect place to connect with nature, meditate, or simply enjoy a contemplative walk in the woods or a picnic lunch by Grassy or Emerson Pond. Itâs open to all faiths and beliefs. And, of course, the panoramic views of Mount Monadnock are breathtaking! As you stroll the property, not only will you find The Altar of the Nation comprised of stones from every state in the US and with other important significance, but also: đ Peaceful walking trails đ A Mother's Chapel with a gentle waterfall đ A garden cemetery đ Gorgeous flowers in bloom throughout The Women's Memorial Belltower is also pretty cool. Itâs a 55-foot stone structure dedicated to American women. The large bronze plates youâll see on its sides were designed by the much-loved American artist, Norman Rockwell. Also on the property is the Hilltop House, complete with soaring ceilings and a stone fireplace. Beneath this event venue is The Peter J. Booras Museum, packed with artifacts and historical remembrances of wars (mostly WWII). Any time of day you visit Cathedral of the Pines will leave a lasting impression. But a visit on the hour is all the more enchanting. Thatâs when the ethereal melody of bells fills the air. â #easyhike #visitnewhampshire #visitnh #peterboroughnh #jackdanielsinn #visitnewengland #weekender #weekenderhotels #optoutside #newhampshireoutdoors #travelgram #getaway #monadonockregion #summer #newhampshire #enjoytravellife #sponsoredtravel #presstrip #cathedralofthepines #rindgenh #mountainview #nhgarden #monadnock #serenity #monadnockregion #mtmonadnock #warheroes #faithinspired #nondenominational #normanrockwell @nhcathedralofthepines @visitnh @visitnew_england @weekender_hotels @jackdanielsinn
It can be hard to find great dining options when youâre a foodie like I am. But I was pleasantly surprised in Peterborough, NH. OK, I admit it. I've become something of a food snob for fresh, local ingredients, unique dishes, and delicious comfort foods. During my stay at The Jack Daniels Inn in Peterborough, I discovered this unassuming little New Hampshire town delivered the goods. Good food, that is! I enjoyed creative dishes and upscale wine while dining along the river; tasty Asian fusion and the freshest oysters; soft NY-style bagels (try the maple walnut cream cheese!); an old-fashioned diner; and creamy, homemade ice-cream. The quality and caliber of each venue I visited in Peterborough was simply phenomenal: â Waterhouse Restaurant â Pearl Restaurant & Oyster Bar â Bagel Mill â Peterborough Diner â Charlieâs Old Tyme Creamery Also highly recommended by the locals: Harlow's Pub, Kogetsu Boiler House, Bantam Grill, Nonies Restaurant & Bakery, Coopershill, and others. My only regret was not having room in my stomach to try more places. Let me just say, the culinary scene in Peterborough, NH is alive and well! Itâs definitely worth the trip to the Monadnock region to try some for yourself. đ˝ â #foodie#visitnewhampshire#visitnh#peterboroughnh#jackdanielsinn#visitnewengland#weekender#weekenderhotels#weekend#vacation#travelgram#getaway#monadonockregion#summer#newhampshire#enjoytravellife#sponsoredtravel#presstrip#culinary#delicious#dinner#oysters#fusion#restaurant#foodpics#foodporn#foodiesofinstagram#foodlovers#eat#foodtravel @visitnh @visitnewengland @weekender_hotels @waterhouserestaurantnh @pearlrestaurant_nh @bagel_mill @peterborough_diner
Covered bridges are the quintessential New England scene. New Hampshire is home to 58 of them, with 33 on the National Register of Historic Places. The wooden cover helps protect them from the rain, snow, and sun. So, it can last up to 100 years! The cover also protects those going under it and reinforces the strength of the bridge. They are a page from bygone days. Covered bridges connected communities separated by the river, ushering livestock and church-goers to their destination. Today, they are a historic attraction in NH and beyond. (Plus, they are a shady place to drop a fishing line!) The Hancock-Greenfield Covered Bridge (also known as County Bridge), was less than 10 miles from my home base at The Jack Daniels Inn in Peterborough, NH. It spans the Contoocook River, connecting the towns of Hancock and Greenfield. This 88-foot bridge replaced the original, built in 1852, destroyed by flood in 1935. The replacement, constructed in 1937, was the first wooden covered bridge in the northeastern built using modern engineering. You can get a lovely view by taking just a few hundred steps into the Powdermill Nature Reserve. Parking is free and plentiful. Or, rent a kayak to paddle up close and beneath this historic structure. Of course, you can always walk or drive through it in your car. But I recommend pausing in a place where you can appreciate this beautiful covered bridgeâs place in time. At one point, NH had more than 400 covered bridges, lost to flood, fires, or neglect. This one is a testament to some good olâ Yankee ingenuity! And, as you can see, itâs really pretty! đ #coveredbridge#visitnewhampshire#visitnh#history#peterboroughnh#jackdanielsinn#visitnewengland#weekender#weekenderhotels#weekend#vacation#travelgram#getaway#monadonockregion#summer#newhampshire#coveredbridgesofinstagram #coveredbridgeofnh#coveredbridgesofnewhampshire#coveredbridgesnh#coveredbridgesofamerica#hancocknh#hancockcoveredbridge#enjoytravellife#sponsoredtravel#presstrip#historicplaces#historicoreservation#scenicdrive #powdermillnaturereserve
For the smallest state in the country, Rhode Island sure has a lot to offer. Just take a look at the Rhode Island State House last night. Itâs glowing red for Peruvian Independence, thanks to a new LED lighting system. But even in the daytime, itâs one of the most beautiful buildings in Providence. Completed in 1901, this grand Renaissance Revival building features white Georgian marble and a gold-covered bronze statue of âThe Independent Man.â Fun fact: Itâs also the fourth largest self-supporting stone covered dome in the world! No surprise that itâs on the National Register of Historic Places. The inside is gorgeous, too, with elegant marble architecture, murals, statues, and historic artifacts. To see it for yourself, you can take a weekday tour when youâre in the area. I happened to be picking up my son from the Providence Train Station last night.
