Highlights
Romanov by Nadine Brandes // Might work as non-fiction, but not as fiction

As a book about the Romanovs, this book sure paints the Romanovs in a good light. * Context and knowledge on history of the events surrounding the story is important, and this book doesnā€™t really give it. While Iā€™m not asking Romanovs to provide a history lesson, I wished the first half of the book can contain more information about the events rather than their dreary routine. However, as a fiction, with its slow pacing, lack of magic, rushed romance, and underdeveloped romance, this book fails to meet my expectations.

Love & Other Curses by Michael Thomas Ford // Full of sassy grandmas and drag queens, but also important discussions.

Heā€™ll spend his time working at the Eezy-Freeze with his dad; cooking up some midsummer magic with his grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother (the Grands); and experimenting with drag with the help of the queens at the Shangri-La, the local gay club. I donā€™t know much about drag other than what I see from the mainstream media, so this book felt like an insight to their world. While Love & Other Curses has so many fun things going on with the sassy grandmas and drag queens all around, this book doesnā€™t shy around from heavy topics such as death, gender and sexuality, as well as being trans and having a drag self. I canā€™t say how accurate this book is in terms of representation, but I feel like this book gives me some insight and more understanding on the issue.
