#FHIR for non-technical professionals: a two-session course Tuesday-Wednesday

If you’re in the health data world, you’ve surely heard of FHIR. If you work in that world but you’re not a hands-on data wrangler, you might have heard of it but not really have a clue what it means in the real world. The program is not for everyone, and it’s not free; it’s focused on non-IT employees, and reasonably priced for a professional program: $315 for members of HL7 (the group that created & manages FHIR), $250 for student members, and $475 for non-members. Upon Completion of this Tutorial, None, though an understanding of healthcare IT will be beneficial I’m a fervent evangelist / advocate for FHIR; it’s the first thing I’ve ever seen in the health data world that’s truly focused on getting data to the point where it’s needed.

Criminal investigation of Facebook begins

The New York Times piece starts thus: Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with some of the world’s largest technology companies, intensifying scrutiny of the social media giant’s business practices as it seeks to rebound from a year of scandal and setbacks. Oh, see also the heading “burying the evidence” in my Jan. 7 post about the #MeToo abuse survivors group that got hacked by vile trolls: “When the admins reported it to FB, FB didn’t investigate – without warning they ERASED THE WHOLE GROUP, destroying all the evidence. Two other concerns” in the Feb 28 post, which includes software they got teens to install that covertly gave FB permission to look at all their photos etc. Two other concerns” in the Feb 28 post, which includes software they got teens to install that covertly gave FB permission to look at all their photos etc.

For patient groups, leaving Facebook isn't easy: the connections can be valuable

What I think Facebook and its investors have failed to see is that people in trouble – including medical trouble – are not fair game for “monetizing I suspect this is because they are precisely the kind of young(ish), self-ish, “medical problems are for other people” ego-hogs who haven’t yet lived long enough to discover that even good, smart, hard-working people can have s4it fly in the window and cause them major problems. But a lot of people – including the terrific NY Times essay “I can’t jump ship from Facebook That won’t change things this week or this month, but I think we need to tell each other that Facebook’s not safe, and start looking for a “lifeboat” we can trust.
