An update from alumni working in Slovakia and Czechia

Marek Drábek OPraem, all alumni of our diploma course (2017-2018), who are working together in the field of safeguarding in the Slovak Republic and Czech Republic. Also, a year-long formation course for the prevention of the sexual abuse of minors offered by the Catholic University of Ružomberok, Faculty of Theology of Košice, Slovak Republic, in collaboration with the Centre for Child Protection of the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome), could not be held entirely online, since it includes face-to-face meetings in addition to online materials. On 3 December 2020, the Department of Roman and Ecclesiastical Law of the Faculty of Law of Trnava University in Trnava, Slovak Republic, organized an online lecture on the topic “Sexual abuse of minors by clerics – historical, canonical, and criminal context”. Dr. Slávka Karkošková, a member of COM Košice, presented terms and definitions (sexual abuse, informed consent, consequences of abuse, etc.), the limits of CSA criminal solutions, and the counterintuitive responses of CSA victims.

Faith and Flourishing Symposium

On 8, 9, and 10 April, Harvard University and The Catholic University of America will host a three-day virtual symposium on child sexual abuse entitled “Faith and Flourishing: Strategies for Preventing and Healing Child Sexual Abuse”. This event provides participants with a unique opportunity to engage with scholars, public health and mental health care professionals, child abuse prevention experts, and religious leaders of diverse faith traditions to share experiences, discover new resources and identify strategies they can implement to prevent child sexual abuse and foster healing for survivors of abuse in their communities. Speakers’ recorded presentations will be available on demand for registered participants (for up to 90 days after the event), and participants can join daily live discussions on cultural barriers and strategies for prevention and healing. Participants who view the program, complete an evaluation and participate in one or more live discussion sessions will receive a certificate of attendance (16 hours of professional development) from the Human Flourishing Program, at Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science.” To participate in this symposium, visit Harvard University’s registration page.

Welcoming Our 2021 Diploma Teaching Staff

He has been a lecturer for the CCP’s English diploma course and has joined the 2021 teaching staff for the Spanish diploma course. She completed her Licentiate in Educational Science at the Pontifical Salesian University (Rome) and obtained both her Licentiate and Doctorate in Psychology at the Pontifical Gregorian University’s Institute of Psychology (Rome). He participated in the first Diploma in Safeguarding course (2016), and now he joins the teaching staff, bringing to the table his own experiences in the field since having completed the course himself. After obtaining her Licentiate in Psychology at the Institute of Psychology of the Pontifical Gregorian University and subsequent specialization in psychotherapy, she has worked as a psychotherapist in the personal accompaniment of priests, religious, seminarians, and novices, including victim-survivors of sexual abuse within the church and without.
