The visit to Ramon crater was really jaw-dropping and due to some similarities between the 2, it reminded me of experiences I had in Yellowstone national park mostly because of its remoteness and uniqueness. Mitzpe Ramon is a small Israeli town (population: ~5000) located halfway between Tel-Aviv and Eilat, meaning it's a 2-2.5 hour drive from either cities. The main attraction of the area is the Ramon Crater (or "Makhtesh Ramon") which is a unique geologic phenomenon that can only be found in the Negev Israeli desert and the Sinai peninsula. In the Israeli part there are 2 more such craters but Ramon crater is the largest of them.
The lighthouse has been a staple of culture in the world since we built boats to sail the seas. Protection from fog, reefs, rocks and other hazards of the coastline have been signaled by these monoliths of light, even before the advent of electricity. Surprisingly, large fires were lit in the top of the early lighthouses, so ship captains knew not to sail to close to them in order to avoid dangers to their ships.
Outside, the lines of the concrete walls transform the winery into a promontory-belvedere extending out from the château, onto which you can climb to admire the vineyard’s beautiful landscape which has been shaped by human hand over the centuries. No line is superfluous and every element helps perfect the wine-making process and practices, as allowed for by the setting – the geometry of the curved surfaces and their pre-cast concrete, the unique atmosphere created by the natural light flowing to the ground, brushing the load-bearing walls and flowing over the large concrete sculptures in the fermenting room.
It's a good entry point for those who want to go west to Tofino or north. I gave a bite and thought to myself, "If that's less sweet…" I did not continue to other places because I understood the idea… I went for a walk on Nanaimo's promenade where at one end of the promenade is the Bastion, which is a type of octagonal fortress. It's actually pretty boring, I mean, between green trees, but it's less exciting at this point. It's hard to explain, but that's how I felt.
