May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of the AAPI community to our culinary world. In a 2020 episode of my podcast Eat Your Heartland Out from @heritage_radio, we talk to Yia Vang, who shares his personal experiences as a food entrepreneur bringing his native Hmong flavors to Minneapolis through Union Hmong Kitchen. This restaurant celebrates Hmong culture, stories, rituals, foods, and flavors, marrying local traditions with those from South and Eastern Asia to bring Hmong cuisine to American palates. Yia shares, "No matter where we were or what we were doing, we could hear the voice of my mom, a tiny Hmong woman, yelling for us to come to eat. My parents believed in eating at the table together. It was a time to take a pause in our lives and connect with each other...the table was a big part of our family life." Each dish at Union Hmong Kitchen tells a story, connecting us through food and tradition. Listen to Yia's inspiring journey at the link in my bio. #AAPIHeritageMonth #AsianAmericanPacificIslander #HmongCuisine #CulinaryHeritage #FoodEntrepreneur #CulturalHeritage #FoodStories #HeritageRadio #FoodAndTradition #MinneapolisEats #FoodConnection #cookbookclub #FoodRadio

#NationalHamburgerDay on May 28 (following #MemorialDay weekend this year) is an excellent opportunity for spending time and sharing a classic American meal with family and friends. Originating from German immigrants who brought the Hamburg steak to America, the burger has become a symbol of culinary creativity. From classic cheeseburgers to Korean-inspired kimchi burgers, this versatile dish reflects our diverse tastes and traditions. Enjoy this weekend with loved ones, sharing stories and delicious meals that bring us together. Check out this delicious recipe, from my cookbook United We Eat, for Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer's signature cheeseburgers. On #MemorialDay, we gather with loved ones to honor the men and women who lost their lives in service to the United States. The Missing Man Table is a poignant tribute to those who never came home — fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S. military service members. Each item symbolizes deep emotions: a round table for everlasting concern, a white cloth for purity, a red rose for their lives, a red ribbon for our resolve to account for our missing, lemon for their bitter fate, salt for tears, a candle for hope, a Bible for faith, an inverted glass for their absence, and an empty chair for the unclaimed seat. As we cherish the time with our families, we remember those who can't join us at our table today. Though we can never repay their sacrifice, let us spend today reflecting on our gratitude for what all our fallen service members gave for our nation. #RememberAndHonor #MissingManTable #HonorTheFallen #MilitarySacrifice #FreedomIsNotFree #InRemembrance #MemorialDay2024 #NeverForget #GratitudeForService

On this #NationalWineDay, falling on #MemorialDay weekend, we honor the memories of loved ones with a glass of wine. Wine has been a cornerstone of cultures throughout history, symbolizing celebration, community, and remembrance. From ancient feasts in Rome to the traditional toasts of today, wine has played a significant role in bringing people together since it was first made by humans as early as 6,000 B.C. As we gather with family and friends, let’s raise our glasses in remembrance and gratitude. The act of sharing wine becomes a tribute to those who have shaped our lives and continue to live in our hearts. Here’s to celebrating their legacy and the enduring power of love and togetherness. #FoodConnection #cookbookclub #foodiesofinstagram #instayum #instafoodgram #foodies #instagood #foodstagram #instafood #recipe #foodpic #yummy #publicradio #delicious #cookbookaddict #hungry #podcastersofinstagram #podcastaddict #recipeblogger #travelfoodie #foodie #foodbringspeopletogether #cometogether #unitedweeat #foodquotes #foodquote #inspirationalquotes #FoodRadio

It’s #NationalBarbecueMonth, just as summer kicks off and families around the nation fire up the grill to prepare flavorful, convenient meals to share with loved ones. A lifelong Nebraskan, Senator Pete Ricketts (who served as the 40th governor of Nebraska from 2015 to 2023) has always enjoyed BBQ. His favorite sauce and rub recipes go great on pork, beef, and chicken, but taste delicious on just about anything. Especially a fresh ear of Nebraska corn. Check out his recipe in my cookbook, United We Eat, available at the link in my bio. #FoodConnection #cookbookclub #foodiesofinstagram #instayum #instafoodgram #foodies #instagood #foodstagram #instafood #recipe #foodpic #yummy #publicradio #delicious #cookbookaddict #hungry #podcastersofinstagram #diy #podcastaddict #recipeblogger #travelfoodie #foodie #foodbringspeopletogether #cometogether #unitedweeat #foodquotes #foodquote #inspirationalquotes #FoodRadio

Finding comfort in every spoonful: Sheila Graham, a renowned journalist known for her insights into Hollywood's golden era, understood the universal solace found in food. As we celebrate #JewishAmericanHeritage Month, her words resonate deeply. Despite the struggles and secrecy surrounding her Jewish heritage, she found solace and pride in her cultural roots later in life. Food played a significant role in reconnecting Sheila with her heritage. She relished the Jewish cooking of her sisters in England and found joy in traditional dishes like blintzes and the rituals of a seder. These moments of sharing food brought her closer to her family and cultural identity. This month, let's honor the rich tapestry of Jewish American heritage by coming together over meals that celebrate tradition and history. Whether it's a family recipe passed down through generations or a new dish inspired by Jewish cuisine, food has the power to connect us to our roots and to each other. #FoodConnection #jewish #foodiesofinstagram #instayum #instafoodgram #foodies #instagood #foodstagram #jewishheritage #hollywood #foodpic #journalists #publicradio #delicious #cookbookaddict #hungry #podcastersofinstagram #diy #podcastaddict #recipeblogger #travelfoodie #foodie #foodbringspeopletogether #cometogether #unitedweeat #foodquotes #foodquote #inspirationalquotes #FoodRadio

Happy National #ButtermilkBiscuitDay! Let's celebrate this Southern staple that has brought people together for centuries. Buttermilk biscuits, often paired with savory sausage gravy, have their origins in Southern Appalachia, likely dating back to the 1800s. This dish became popular post-Revolutionary War, especially among low-income communities. Pork, being inexpensive and high in fat, made biscuits and gravy an affordable, high-calorie meal for laborers. Today, buttermilk biscuits remain a symbol of comfort and hospitality. You can keep the tradition alive with handmade biscuits! Make sure to use super cold butter, grated for the best texture, and working the dough by hand to ensure perfect flakiness. Recipe: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter, grated 3/4 cup buttermilk Preheat oven to 450°F. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and stir until just combined. Knead the dough gently, pat into a 1-inch-thick round, and cut out biscuits. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy these biscuits warm, and let them bring a little Southern hospitality to your table! #FoodConnection #cookbookclub #foodiesofinstagram #instayum #instafoodgram #foodies #instagood #foodstagram #instafood #recipe #foodpic #yummy #publicradio #delicious #cookbookaddict #hungry #podcastersofinstagram #diy #podcastaddict #recipeblogger #travelfoodie #foodie #foodbringspeopletogether #cometogether #unitedweeat #foodquotes #foodquote #inspirationalquotes #FoodRadio

Today, as we celebrate Mother's Day, let's honor the comforting power of a mother's cooking. Imagine two politicians from opposite sides finding friendship over mom’s homemade lasagna. This story, told in my cookbook United We Eat, shows us how food connects us, serving not just our stomachs but our hearts. It reminds us that our mothers' recipes — rich in tradition and seasoned with history — are more than just meals. They are invitations to gather, share, and cherish the moments that make life beautiful. Today, let's celebrate all mothers—the keepers of our culinary heritage, whose dishes have the power to open hearts and build bridges. May your #MothersDay be filled with the flavors of love and the joy of family. Get your own copy of United We Eat at the link in my bio. #FoodConnection #cookbookclub #foodiesofinstagram #instayum #instafoodgram #foodies #instagood #foodstagram #instafood #recipe #foodpic #yummy #publicradio #delicious #cookbookaddict #hungry #podcastersofinstagram #diy #podcastaddict #recipeblogger #travelfoodie #foodie #foodbringspeopletogether #cometogether #unitedweeat #foodquotes #foodquote #inspirationalquotes #FoodRadio
