In the news for international agriculture, a new Dartmouth-led commentary in Nature Food argues for sustainability and equity over industrial agriculture through the agroecology movement. Agroecology is gaining traction as a powerful approach to farming that aims to create food systems that are both environmentally friendly and socially just. Unlike industrial agriculture, which relies on chemicals and heavy machinery, agroecology promotes biodiversity, supports farmers' livelihoods, and ensures the food we eat is meaningful and culturally relevant. In 2023, the U.S. Agroecology Summit highlighted the need for equitable representation and support for all stakeholders, including small family farmers, migrant workers, and Black and Indigenous farmers. This summit is part of a growing movement, which imagines a future where our food systems are sustainable and inclusive, providing healthy, culturally rich food for everyone while protecting our planet.
