Artist Carl H. Bradford’s recent mixed media works focus on jazz, telling a visual story about the artists and their music. I surround myself with the many creative efforts of classic jazz and up and coming jazz musicians, bouncing between the older classics and the new. For the past six years, I have done the reverse—locking the features into the top layers with the background layers blended around the subjects. Though I’m still experimenting with new approaches, color techniques, formats and executions, I see myself capturing or recording the history of jazz for a new generation of traditionalists.
It’s my goal to seek out this extraordinary, nature-made art and digitally capture as much of it as I possibly can. Not only do the unusual colors make my images a bit more intriguing, visually appealing and even somewhat surreal, they also, in fact, help enhance subtle details within the image, especially in darker areas. Noted in my images are ribbon-like fern leaves, surreal looking lily pads, the bold, rigid veins seen on crotons, reflected plants growing in or floating on bodies of water, the breathtaking variety of colors in sea grape leaves, the simplicity of thin, delicate grasses and the fury of palm fronds being buffeted by strong winds. Through my art, I seek to reveal and capture the astounding scenic treasures obscured all around us and, in doing so, help others rediscover and/or experience a deeper splendor of nature as I have.
Artist Elaine Florimonte’s abstract landscape paintings consist of layers of paint that focus on the interaction of light. Fluency in art is developed just the same as fluency in any new language. In my studio I try to paint instinctively, following the informed practice that comes from years of experience. I am an artist educator, teaching introductory and advanced art at the high school level and working on my own artistic practice for twenty-plus years.
