Gemfields and National Geographic unite to explore cutting-edge tracking collars

Gemfields is proud of its gemstones featured in the jewellery of luxury houses and cutting-edge designers, but the company is also particularly proud of one small collection that will never appear on the catwalk or red carpet. It’s a collection of satellite collars worn by the animals under the protection of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, an initiative supported by Gemfields as part of its conservation and care projects in Africa. As captured by Shannon in her first film, the rangers at the Zambian Carnivore Programme analyse the data from the collars to monitor and track lion prides, wild dogs and cheetahs in the Greater Kafue Ecosystem, the largest protected area in Zambia. Wild’s second film sees her spending time in the remote Montepuez region of Mozambique, home of Gemfields’ Montepuez ruby mine, shooting the two mobile health clinics that serve six villages – something that struck a chord with Wild, whose mother was a nurse back in Australia.

Colour on the carpet: 91st Academy Awards

This year’s ‘host-free’ Oscars, featured a number of A-list actresses championing colour on the carpet. Statement earrings and necklaces proved popular jewellery choices with coloured gemstones appearing alongside diamonds. Letitia Wright chose earrings featuring diamond and sapphires, while Gemma Chan gave a nod to the mismatch trend, sporting one earring in sapphires and one in emeralds. Charlize Theron contrasted two diamond necklaces with her multi-coloured earrings, whilst other kaleidoscopic confections included Laura Harrier’s necklace of emerald, rubellite and diamonds.

GEMFIELDS unveils USD15M state-of-the-art, industry-leading sort house

A greater number of washing plants – the equivalent of washing 10,000 tonnes of ore per day – combined with UV optical sorting account for how throughput will increase exponentially, translating into significantly higher production figures. 2019 will be a significant year of investment and growth for Gemfields’ ruby mine, as the new sort house will be complemented by the implementation of a new thickener to the wash plant, increasing capacity to 150 tonnes per hour (from 125 tonnes per hour). Two high capacity pre-screen plants will be brought on-line to remove the finer particle material prior to it being fed to the wash-plant, which will result in a greater concentration of the desired size material, further enhancing the wash plant feed capacity. We are delighted to inaugurate this state-of-the-art, industry-leading ruby sort house today and will continue to strive to deliver best-in-class operations and promote transparency, trust and sustainable mining practices.
