Interview with the Author: The Bloated Belly Whisperer by Tamara Duker Freuman

digestive system is so individualized, when starting to investigate triggers for IBS-like symptoms, do you recommend first and foremost keeping a food diary to track food and symptoms? Getting on a good bowel regimen (laxatives and/or fiber), using Gas X and/or avoiding high FODMAP foods that contribute to excess intestinal gas often can help reduce the amount of ‘stuff’ in the digestive tract that can lead to feelings of bloating. In many cases, I might also suggest switching to softer-textured foods eaten in a small, frequent meal pattern to reduce the degree of distention that a meal introduces to the GI tract, and to facilitate faster passage out of the stomach (helpful if you’re having bloating from reflux) and faster assimilation of nutrients—which is helpful if you are prone to malabsorption following an intestinal surgery or radiation enteritis. The Cold Brew Coffee flavor is creamy and indulgently textured like an ice cream because it’s made with eggs, but since it’s totally dairy-free, it’s well tolerated by many of my patients who just don’t do well with milk or cream.

Watercress

One cup chopped watercress contains 4 calories, 1 g protein, <1 g carbohydrate, and <1 g fat. With 85 mcg of vitamin K in 1 cup, watercress provides 106% of the daily value of this vitamin. In a 2017 meta-analysis on vitamin K intake and fracture risk, it was found that higher vitamin K intake may moderately decrease risk of fractures [iv]. The Science Nook on Diet Quality and Mortality Risk in Colorectal Cancer

The American Cancer Society Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention (ACS-score): high score indicates consumption of at least five servings per day of fruits and vegetable, variety of fruits and vegetables, higher intake of whole grains than refined, and low intake of red/processed meats. No association between the prudent diet and colorectal cancer specific mortality, although there was a significant inverse trend with all other remaining causes The authors found for change in diet quality from pre- to post-diagnosis: 1. Those with high Western diet scores before or after diagnosis were at increased risk of colorectal cancer specific mortality and total mortality compared with those with low scores 2. In those with low diet quality pre-diagnosis, improved DASH and prudent scores from pre- to post-diagnosis were inversely associated with colorectal cancer specific mortality [ii] For the Patient and Caregiver The features of the dietary patterns looked at in this study that were associated with decreased risk of mortality overall have in common: increased consumption of plant-based foods and fiber and decreased consumption of red and processed meat and added sugars.
