TO ALL THE MOMS and missing mine and my grandmother so much but I know they are here with me, guiding me and loving me. My mother inspired me so greatly while she was here but oddly enough she inspires me MORE than ever since she has been gone. She has guide me through everything then and now. If your mom is still here on earth I hope you spoil her today or are lucky enough to hug her. Girls like me try to stay very busy today as the day passes. If your mom is not here just know you’re not alone today. Even nine years later - this day hurts but I know she would tell me “knock it off and get that yard in order!” The mulch won’t let me stop and cry and my OCD is SO PLEASED by all of the mulching I’m living in its approval and encouragement today. My ménagerie. I love this time of year when everything slowly blocks everyone and everything beyond my property line out. It’s my own little bubble and I LOVE IT. None of this was here before me. All of the privacy planting was installed by me with some help along the way. If you want privacy, you can have it. One season at a time - work on it. I started this planting frenzy in 2014 to block a neighboring eyesore in view of my front yard and it’s come so far. Necessity turned obsession. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with all of them who are so eager to create a bountiful garden! High Aspirations @highaspirationskc in Kansas City, MO is a mentorship program for African American male youth ages 8-18. It’s a place where they can receive mentorship, learn to play chess, get a haircut for free, cook in a test kitchen, and hang out together in a safe and supportive environment on Saturdays when male youth is most at risk. This initiative was created and is led by Mr. Henry Wash who has dedicated his life in service to others. He has created an entire garden specifically to teach the boys how to grow their own produce in an area where it’s not always easy to get access to grocery stores. If you know a young man or boy who could use guidance and mentorship in the Kansas City area, or if you are interested in donating, mentoring, working with the gardens - please DM me and I will send you in the right direction. There is a lot of truth to this… 😜 it’s been raining off and on here. There is so much to do outside here is my priority list in order of importance (I’m typing this now so I won’t forget) 1. Trim liriope 2. Fill in and reseed where the dogs run and bare spots 3. Reseed areas that are sparse it’s going to be a rainy week 4. MULCH MULCH MULCH - I brought in 15 cubic yards of mulch and I have yet to touch this mega pile. The kids have had a lot of fun playing on it tho… this is the first of like 100 things that need to get done outside. I’ve learned they like moist soil, I water weekly and sometimes more if the top layer is dry. This beautiful, slow growing plant puts out a burst of small flowers that look like they are made perfectly from wax. I left it in soil and perlite mix inside of a Tupperware for about 2 months making sure the soil was moist not wet and left on the ground in my indoor grow room. I water weekly and as always the ones I tend to and try to make sure they do amazing fail while others that I wanter twice a month sporadically in the basement look great!
So, the first thing that happened that really set off my love of landscaping was when we had a Bobcat track loader come in to clear more of the land in the backyard to expand our existing grass area and expose the large oak trees. There were some peaks of big rocks sticking up and when the operator started pulling these massive, gorgeous rocks up and roughing up the dirt in the tree line, I realized, we have A TON of rock back there! when I was pulling the rock for the 220′ long bed on the south side of the property, so I called the local rock warehouse and asked them to estimate the limestone for 460′ (this ONE bed is long and the rock runs up both sides. Located in every single Lowe’s (that I’ve come across) is this incredible rack of somewhat sad or overgrown plants, shrubs and trees.
