The average tourist knows all about the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the fabulous shopping in Milan or the beaches in southern France, but there are plenty of beautiful European cities that are off the radar for most travelers. Walk through its Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and get lost along its cobblestone streets that wind between churches, farmers markets, and local cafes. The historic center is one of the country’s prettiest and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is Count Dracula’s capital and is home to Dracula’s castle and his remains.
If you purchase your health insurance through your home university and you’re going on an internal program, you most likely don’t need to add anything extra to cover you internationally. This price increases significantly the quicker you need your passport, so don’t wait until the last minute if you’re trying to save some money. You don’t want to find out after the fact that your credits won’t transfer because your host university didn’t recognize you as a legit student. If there is wiggle room in your host country’s situation, don’t be afraid to get creative…just don’t forget that you’ll have to pay it anyway if you plan on flying anywhere on weekends/school breaks to get back into your host country.
If you’re a ski enthusiast, then you cannot pass up the opportunity to ski some of the most famous peaks in the world; if you’re a novice, then there won’t be a better time or place to pick up a new hobby! Budapest is known as the “City of Baths,” and Széchenyi will offer you the opportunity to completely relax – and approximately €17 gets you access to the baths for a full day! It’s also around the holidays when, arguably, the best food is served and the cuisine varies drastically depending on what city or country you’re in. Winter in Europe can provide the opportunity to do some really cool activities (pun intended), so don’t forget your hats, gloves and scarves (and your bathing suit for the thermal spas! ) because you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time outdoors this winter.
This is great for budget travelers, but for study abroad students, you might not end up saving that much money in the end due to the baggage fees, which can be as much as $80 per bag per flight. So be sure to check the fine print to see what you’ll be charged extra for before you booking your international flight for your study abroad semester. They aren’t perfect, in fact budget airlines can be incredibly frustrating, but you’ll save big money on your study abroad flights than if you were to book with a normal airline. You can also sign up for a service like Jack’s Flight Club or Scott’s Cheap Flights to find deals for your international flight or ones when you’re studying abroad.
