Ben is also the great-nephew of Homère Clément, founder of Rhum Clement and a huge driving force in creating rhum agricole as it is now known and produced on Martinique. As I mentioned above, it’s a very simple mixture of lime, sugar, and rhum agricole, usually served without dilution at room temperature. Just like everyone takes their coffee differently, it’s understood that everyone has their own preference for how they like their Ti’Punch – heavy on lime, light on syrup, sugar instead of syrup, etc. To make a Ti’ Punch the way Ben’s mother preferred, you start by cutting your lime.
In case you haven’t heard, my first cocktail book, Cocktails, Mocktails and Garnishes from the Garden is coming out on March 16 from Yellow Pear Press! You can pre-order your copy of Cocktails, Mocktails and Garnishes from the Garden on Amazon, Bookshop, and Barnes & Noble. To celebrate the book’s upcoming release, I’m hosting a pretty amazing giveaway on Instagram, and I want to extend it to blog readers as well! It’s hard to imagine a time when bars didn’t have maraschino liqueur and Green Chartreuse on their shelves, or when ordering a Negroni or Old Fashioned would earn you a blank stare. The SoHo bar became a Manhattan landmark, and the birthplace of many drinks that are downright legendary: the Gin-Gin Mule, the Old Cuban, the Little Italy, the Fitty Fitty Martini… these drinks were so ubiquitous when I began learning about cocktails that I just assumed they’d been around forever. Many of Saunders’ new classics are efforts to make old classics – especially gin cocktails, which weren’t so much in vogue at the time – appeal to modern drinkers. It follows a method that Saunders seems to use often, taking a simple classic like a gin sour and adding something that makes it special – in this case, an infusion of Earl Grey tea.
The Corpse Reviver #1 recipe is simple: equal parts Calvados or apple brandy, Cognac, and sweet vermouth. Since I’ve only discussed apple brandies in passing, this might be a good time to quickly review your options for this and other apple brandy cocktails. I can’t make too many sweeping statements about the comparison as I haven’t tried many different bottles, but comparing the Laird’s Bonded Apple Brandy and the Busnel Vieille Reserve VSOP Calvados reminded me of comparing a rye with a bourbon – In the virtual class I mentioned above, Cannon speculated that Craddock used the Corpse Reviver was something of a catchall category for drinks that didn’t fit any other template.
HELP BARTENDERS IN NEED! Read on! ⬇️ Hard seltzer is making a comeback in a huge way right now, and @drinksuperbrew has officially got me on the bandwagon. Created in Cape Cod by a neuroscientist and a goat farmer (no, really), Willie's Superbrew is a line of deliciously light and fizzy hard seltzers made from all real fruit juices and cane sugar. They're great on their own but also really fun to mix with. I used the Lemon and Ginger brew in this easy and tasty riff on a Penicillin that you can definitely make while self-quarantining! . Here's the best part: the wonderful folks at Willie's Superbrew will donate $1 to the Bartender Emergency Assistance Program for every comment on this post and for every follow they receive in the next 24 hours! Up to $500! So please COMMENT below - let me know what bar you are missing the most right now! And FOLLOW @drinksuperbrew! . For March’s #BoozeByTheBook, our little Boston cocktail gang chose Drinking Like Ladies by @mistymezkalkofen and @drinkinglikekitty since it’s Women’s History Month. It’s a great book that highlights extraordinary women throughout history and pairs each with a cocktail by a female bartender. I chose the Change-Driver, created by @bacchanalaureate in honor of Nigerian women’s rights activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. I photographed it in front of all the cocktail books I own written by women - can you recommend any that I’m missing? . Change-Driver 1.5 oz. @fordsgin (I used @empress1908gin) 1/2 oz. Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao 3/4 oz. Amaro Nonino 3/4 oz. lemon juice 1 dash lavender bitters (@scrappysbitters) Shake with ice and serve in a rocks glass over ice (clear cube from @boston_clear_ice) garnished with a sprig of lavender. . . . #cocktails #cocktailrecipes #gin #gincocktails #drinkinglikeladies #lavender #drinks #booze #liquor #liqpic #liquorgram #imbibe #imbibegram #cocktailsofinstagram #drinkstagram #drinkstafam #happyhour #craftcocktails #homemixology
During my last big shopping trip before self-isolating, I was lucky enough to find both kiwi berries (see two posts ago) AND kumquats! Last time I visited my in-laws in Louisiana I picked kumquats right off the tree and discovered how great they can be. They’re such surprising little fruits with their sweet skins and tart flesh. Kumquat syrup makes a great daiquiri and is also delicious in this whiskey sour riff. . Kumquarantine (Sorry, couldn’t resist) 2 oz. rye whiskey (@redemptionwhiskey) 3/4 oz. kumquat syrup* 3/4 oz. lemon juice 1/4 oz. @apologueliqueurs Saffron Liqueur 1/2 oz. egg white Reverse dry shake and strain into a coupe. Garnish with kumquat slices and thyme. *For syrup, simmer 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add 1 cup quartered kumquats and simmer briefly. Mash lightly with a muddler or potato masher. Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for at least 30 minutes. Strain and let cool before using. . . . #cocktails #cocktailrecipes #quarantinecocktails #quarantini #whiskeysour #whiskeycocktails #rye #kumquats #eggwhitecocktails #garnish #garnishgame #drinks #booze #liquor #saffronliqueur #liqpic #liquorgram #imbibe #imbibegram #drinkstagram #cocktailsofinstagram #happyhour #mixology #craftcocktails #homemixology
How is quarantine treating everyone? It’s strange being so physically isolated from each other. Most people are talking about how much extra time they have on their hands, but with daycare canceled I feel like I have a lot less! (Please send toddler activities. And booze.) I’m hoping to have a chance to make drinks with some of the fun and interesting ingredients I’ve been sitting on for way too long. One of them is @drinktrakal, a unique spirit from Chilean Patagonia - not far from where I recently was in Argentina! It’s distilled from apples and pears and flavored with local herbs and berries. It has an incredible herbaceous flavor that’s unlike anything else. I wanted to keep the Trakal (Trä•kál?) front and center, so I made this martini variation from their site. Green Chartreuse is a really wonderful partner for this spirit! . Patagonian Alchemist (by Robert Sickler, @finnsmanor) 1.5 oz. @drinktrakal 1.5 oz. @vermouthdolin Blanc 1/4 oz. Green Chartreuse 2 dashes grapefruit bitters (@scrappysbitters) Stir with ice (instructions said shake but I respectfully disagree). Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a lemon peel. . . . #cocktails #cocktailrecipes #quarantini #martini #martiniriff #clearcocktails #trakal #drinks #booze #liquor #liqpic #liquorgram #imbibe #imbibegram #drinkstagram #cocktailsofinstagram #happyhour #homemixology #mixology #craftcocktails #spirits #patagonia
Everything is a bit crazy and scary right now, but I've got two happy thoughts to help you look on the bright side: 1. This Thursday is the first day of spring! 2. We can always drink gin. Personally I'm drinking @juniperogin, a fantastic London dry style gin made in San Francisco. One of the first American craft gins, Junipero is unfiltered for a really bold flavor that makes it particularly great in a Gin & Tonic. Which is a perfect cocktail to make when you're quarantined, by the way - two nonperishable ingredients, plus whatever fresh or creative garnishes you have at your disposal. I recently visited @invernadero.bn, a fantastic bar in Buenos Aires that specializes in creative G&T’s, so I took some inspiration from the drinks I had there and decided to work some fresh and spicy flavors into this springtime take on an unbeatable classic. . Spring Fever 2 oz. @juniperogin 4 oz. tonic water 4 kiwi berries, halved 1/2 tsp. pink peppercorns Combine gin and kiwi berries in a glass and lightly muddle. Fill glass with ice and top with tonic water. Sprinkle in peppercorns and stir gently. Garnish with kiwi berries and edible flowers. . . . #sponsored @hotalingandco #gin #JuniperoGin #PicturePerfectGin #UnapologeticallyJunipero #cocktails #cocktailrecipes #ginandtonic #kiwiberries #drinks #booze #liquor #liqpic #liquorgram #imbibe #imbibegram #drinkstagram #cocktailsofinstagram #mixology #homemixology #happyhour
Hey everybody. It’s been a minute. And the whole world seems to have descended into absolute chaos since last time I posted. I hope you’re all staying healthy and staying sane. Global pandemic aside, I’ve had a big week - we moved into our new house on Saturday. And I must say, it’s not a bad place to be quarantined! I originally whipped up this Mimosa variation with @risatawines Moscato D’Asti as a celebratory libation, but it’s just as good when consumed under less cheerful circumstances. Sparkling wine has a way of making everything feel ok. The Mimosa is probably the most accessible, widely-enjoyed cocktail there is, and it’s impossible to beat in terms of simplicity vs. impact. For @risatawines’ #YouHadMeAtMimosa campaign, I wanted to create a tasty variation on the Mimosa with Risata Moscato D’Asti that is still as simple to make as the original. So I combined it with another crowd-pleaser, the Piña Colada! The result is even better than I expected - a delicious and elegant tropical cocktail you can whip up in seconds. . Mimosa Colada 1.5 oz. pineapple juice 1.5 oz. coconut water 4 oz. @risatawines Moscato D’Asti Combine in a champagne flute and enjoy! . . . #sponsored #cocktails #cocktailrecipes #mimosa #champagnecocktails #sparklingwine #butfirstchampagne #bubbly #drinks #booze #liqpic #liquorgram #imbibe #imbibegram #drinkstagram #easycocktails #cocktailsofinstagram #tropicalcocktails #pinacolada #homemixology #happyhour #brunchcocktails

I recently went out to @woodshillpier4 with @brimiers for some drinks and snacks, and it was truly fantastic. They have a focus on local and sustainable ingredients, all the way down to the spirits that they put in their cocktails. And they’re located right on the water in Boston’s Seaport, so the views are absolutely gorgeous. If you haven’t been, make it your next spot for dinner or drinks! Happy (day before) Mardi Gras! It was a bit of an adjustment moving out of Louisiana and realizing that no one in Boston even knew when Mardi Gras was. Back home we would have off from school and everything. And I’m the weeks leading up, we would of course eat tons of King Cake! Now my parents send me one every year. I found my stash of plastic babies while packing and it was clear that one had to end up in a drink. I tried to make it taste like King Cake! . C.P.B.I.C. Ridiculous Bloody Mary garnishes: are you for them or against them? I am firmly Team Ridiculous Garnish and nothing you say will convince me otherwise. I’m glad that there’s one drink where it’s acceptable to go absolutely bonkers. And that’s what me and my husband did at @ward8bos this morning at their Bloody Mary bar! We garnished our Green Bloody and Wasabi & Soy Bloody with pickled veggies, shrimp, bacon, fried chicken and waffle, and even a cinnamon bun. It honestly could have been a meal (but you’d better believe I ordered food too, I do NOT skimp at brunch). More in my Stories! Today I christened the new house with a Tiki cocktail! Our #BoozeByTheBook club chose Smuggler’s Cove for February. In the past I’ve dived deep into the book for recipes, but this time I stopped at the second recipe, a classic called the Pupule or (more appetizingly) the Nui Nui. It was created by Don the Beachcomber in the mid-1930’s, and it’s just as delicious today! . Pupule 3/4 oz. orange juice 3/4 oz. lime juice 1/4 oz. cinnamon syrup 1/4 oz. vanilla syrup 1/4 oz. Allspice Dram 2 oz. column still aged rum (@kirkandsweeney) 1 dash Angostura bitters Flash blend with crushed ice and open pour into a footed Pilsner glass. Garnish with a long orange peel. .
