Don’t you just want to SCREAM when you see an opossum?! 😍😍 Now, we know they aren’t everyone’s favorite critter (and perhaps you’re screaming not out of cuteness rage), but let’s bust some myths to help spread the opossum love! 💖 🍼 Opossums are the ONLY marsupials found in North America, meaning they carry and nurse their young in a pouch (just like wombats, koalas, and kangaroos!). 😴 “Playing possum,” where an opossum plays dead when threatened, is actually an involuntary response that can last from a few minutes to a few hours. 🦠 Opossums do NOT carry rabies due to their lower body temperature. 🦟 These cuties control pests like ticks, which can reduce the spread of Lyme disease - YES, please! 🏙️ Opossums are highly adaptable and can live in various environments, from forests to urban areas. So next time a friend or family member talks down on these fascinating creatures, remind them that opossums play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance and are quite beneficial to have around! 🌍 How do you practice living WITH wildlife? 🏡💚
Can I get a G... Can I get a S... Can I get an I! G-S-I! 💚 You know we love some green stormwater infrastructure! Watching this stormwater bumpout change with the seasons has been such a treat. From the soggy, chilly days of March to the (very) warm days of July, it’s been amazing to see these plants—grasses, perennials, and shrubs—thrive on all the water runoff. Runoff water is directed underneath the system to be stored, infiltrated, and absorbed, with the vegetation kept short to maintain open sight lines for traffic. 🌧️➡️🌿 What is your favorite type of GSI?

🌡️ Philly is feeling the heat! The USDA updated the Plant Hardiness Zone Map in 2023 (the first time since 1990) revealing our city is now warmer, moving into Zone 7b. This change highlights the impact of climate change, affecting what plants we can grow. 🌱@AcadNatSci researchers are tracking these shifts, using their collections to understand and adapt to our changing environment. 🌿✨ 📸 This photo is from this years Philadelphia Flower Show where Jennifer Designs created “America in Bloom,” a floral map showcasing the new USDA zone map. The Alliance for Watershed Education’s (AWE) Delaware River Watershed Fellowship program may be for you. The program employs fellows across 23 different watershed centers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. All fellows will participate in a 3-day overnight training at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (this training may be moved to zoom depending on COVID restrictions), with supplemental webinars throughout the summer designed to engage fellows from different centers with each other and educate fellows on conservation across the watershed. Click here to view the list of watershed centers involved in the program — each center’s page provides specific information on eligibility requirements.
