The ancient city of Varanasi is a place I'll never forget. Witnessing the daily rituals at the sacred ghats along the Ganges, including open-air cremations, ritual washing, and other traditional ceremonies, was an experience that will stay with me forever. Varanasi holds immense religious significance for Hindus, who believe that dying in this holy city leads to moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. The spiritual energy that permeates the city is unmistakable. It's full-on and, at times, overwhelming. This is adventurous travel at its rawest and most intense. Northern Turkey 🇹🇷 (or Karadeniz) is full of surprises and offbeat adventures. Here are a few places you should definitely visit: 1. Sumela Monastery: At an altitude of 1,200 metres, perched on a ledge halfway up a vertical cliff, Sumela Monastery has the most incredible setting imaginable. This ancient monastery offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into Turkey's rich history. 2. Amasra: One of the prettiest towns in northern Turkey, Amasra is located on a narrow peninsula, connected by a Byzantine-era stone bridge. It has a picturesque natural harbour where you'll find several little restaurants with outside terraces. It's a great place to watch the sunset, feast on freshly caught fish, and make friends with the town's friendly locals. 3. Coastal Drive from Amasra to Sinop: This is one seriously epic drive. In parts single-track and poorly paved, this road will probably amaze and terrify you in equal measure. The views are breathtaking, as the road snakes around jagged cliffs, passing through emerald-green forests, above the impossibly blue, glistening sea. Don't forget to stop along the way to explore the quaint fishing villages along this scenic route. 4. Ani: Explore the ancient ruins of Ani, the City of 1,001 Churches. Ani was the capital of the medieval Armenian kingdom in the 10th and 11th centuries. At this time, it was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world. Damaged by earthquakes, harsh weather, and repeated Mongol invasions, the beautiful buildings were later abandoned and forgotten. Today, this amazing, otherworldly place feels like a mythical ghost city. It’s definitely one of the most underrated locations in Turkey. Have you ever visited this beautiful region? Serra de São Macário: Drive (or hike) to the top of this majestic mountain to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, peace, and tranquillity. Estrada do Portal do Inferno: Another amazing drive – this dramatic mountain pass is not for the faint-hearted, with sheer drops on each side, but the views are worth it! Aldeia da Pena: A picturesque and atmospheric little village nestled in a deep valley, frozen in time. This part of northern Portugal is full of natural beauty and authentic culture – I love it!
