Why should you wear orange on September 30th?

September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children The day is meant to raise awareness about residential schools and the many people who suffered. Orange Shirt Day is actually based on a true story of a real orange shirt that was taken from a residential school survivor, her name is Phyllis Jack-Webstad. We have information at our fingertips and a few quick searches will pull up loads of information about Phyllis Jack-Webstad, Orange Shirt Day, and residential schools.

A laptop scholarship? What's that?

This idea came to local business owner and mom, Sharon Perry, trying her best to navigate having three kids in school during a global pandemic. they weren’t prepared for that need when it arose after Spring Break and not only did she quickly realize that each of her children needed their own device to attend classes remotely, but Sharon was running a small business and couldn’t give up her device for hours a day to accommodate class schedules nor was it fair to make one or more of her children wait until she was finished her workday to have access to a shared computer. – says a mom of 1 middle schooler in Surrey BC Given that Sharon’s business, Sharon Perry Chartered Accountants, is located in the tri-cities this scholarship is currently available to families in School District 43 with children entering grades 6-10 in the 2020/2021 school year. I think the laptop scholarship is a fantastic idea and a creative way to give back to the community by addressing a timely need for families.
