For the past thirty years, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, has been educating visitors about the American Civil Rights Movement. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated while speaking with colleagues on the balcony of his hotel room at the Lorraine Motel. James Earl Ray killed Martin Luther King with a single rifle shot from the bathroom window (the window on the far right) of a rooming house across the street from where King was staying. While I think that our kids had a relatively good understanding of the civil rights movement both from school and from being exposed to it at home (we do like our documentaries and American history!), this museum brought it to life and showcased the cruel injustices in American history in a way that they had never seen before.
With all of my kids, it was easy to find engaging books or ones that interested them when they were early readers, and it’s been easy to find ones at a high school reading level. However, the tween years proved to be tough – too old for the cartoony books of youth and too young for most young adult/adult literature. But Explorer Academy from National Geographic Kids totally changed that! And kids will love the codebreaking challenges, future tech, and problem-solving included in each book.
Paddlefish is conveniently docked at The Landing at Disney Springs – and given that it’s shaped like a modern steamboat, there’s no missing the restaurant. In addition to having a variety of entree choices ranging from typical chicken fingers and burgers to filet and crab, kids also get a pack of Wikki Stix to play with while they wait. You can explore the estate grounds before and after your timed house tour reservation, so we recommend getting there early. The tour is engaging and informative, and there’s even a special audio tour for kids, narrated by the Vanderbilt’s dog, Cedric. In addition to the self-guided house tour and audio tour, Biltmore also offers guided tours. Antler Hill Village, a five-mile drive from the Biltmore House parking lot, connects the past with the present and is where you’ll find much of the dining and shopping on the estate.

We’re not picky when it comes to Disney Transportation and we use a variety on every trip. One time Jake and I took a spin on the parking lot tram (roundtrip) just so we could say we used every mode of transportation on our trip. 😂 . However, I think the Railroad is probably my favorite mode of transportation (oooh, or the skyliner!) and I’m so bummed that I haven’t been on it in forever. The Disneyland Railroad was closed the last two times we were on the west coast and the Magic Kingdom Railroad has been closed for the past year and a half. Two years ago, a friend and I met her Disney College Program daughter for a fun weekend at the Most Magical Place on Earth. With rain in the forecast and a purse full of ponchos, we chatted with the CM’s and waited patiently for the announcement that the Rainy Day Cavalcade would be running instead of Festival of Fantasy. Surprisingly, none of the CM’s had seen the Rainy Day Cavalcade either. . All of a sudden, it started to POUR and everyone abandoned their spots along Main Street to take cover in the stores. That is, everyone except for us. No, we put on ponchos and stood in the pouring rain holding our prime curb spot, waiting for the announcement and continued chatting with the CM’s. The parade kept getting delayed but the Rainy Day Cavalcade announcement never came. . But, our new CM friends decided that we were Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather since our ponchos matched the dress colors of the fairies; they gave us a Mickey balloon and offered to take pictures for us in front of the castle. And then, they escorted us to VIP seating for the Festival of Fantasy Parade (which did end up running, just an hour late!)! . Today’s #ColorMeParkHopper was “Just Add Water” and while I have plenty of waterpark/pool or water ride pics to choose from, this was my all-time favorite water experience. We don’t normally spend a lot of time meeting characters these days since the kids are more into the rides. But on our girls trip in February, I made sure to get a FP+ to meet Rapunzel since we were doing Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Ellie was bringing her Tangled dress. Oh my gosh, this character meet was pure magic- Ellie LOVED that they were wearing matching dresses and she and Rapunzel spent so much time talking and twirling. 😍🥰 . While we always make time to go to World of Disney and grab lunch somewhere, @splitsville.orlando is a new(er) fave of ours since we went for the first time last summer.
