My blog, named after my two middle names (mae + islais), is a passion project focused on the broader subjects of travel + lifestyle. The past six years my life have revolved around the study of art history. I have both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in the subject. During my academic career, I was fortunately able to travel extensively both for pleasure and research.
As a result of a combination of my personality and academic background, I research all my trips obsessively, curating my travel experience. “Curating” travel, to me, is selecting experiences that are authentic to the destination, while not sacrificing aesthetics or design in the process. For example, the most visited tourist destinations in a city are usually not always the most interesting or beautiful. In my experience, selecting hotels, restaurants, AirBnBs, museums, markets, etc based on both aesthetics and quality can lead to more fulfilling travel experiences.
The second focus of my blog, also developed as a result of my academic background of art history, is design-focused living. I believe that curating and organizing your physical space and possessions with a focus on design, so to speak, can lead to a more fulfilling, functional life. My intent is for this blog is to share my curated travel + living with others.
