We finally got to see our baby boy! After weeks of waiting turns out the third times the charm! I can’t even begin to tell you the sigh of relief that I felt seeing his little face! He’s growing beautifully and is measuring right where he should be 💕 Can you believe this is the last ultrasound we get? Not gonna lie I’m thinking about booking a 4D one in the third trimester like we did last time. Sometimes keeping a child alive looks like this… Seeing someone else’s boobs because they’re keeping their child alive… And that is worth the cracked nipples, the pump parts, the engorgement, the lopsided boobs, the waking every two hours and the heat of a thousand stares if you dare to nurse where others can see. It takes strength. It takes courage. It takes support. This week is World Breastfeeding Week. This post is for the mama hiding in the car feeding her child. The mama NOT hiding in her car for the very first time. This post is for the new mama I once was. I hope you feel seen, I hope you feel supported and I hope you feel loved. Have you ever heard of getting your brows laminated? I’m one of the few people my age that didn’t pluck all their eyebrow hair out in the 90s. Mine are legit still full and BUSHY! If you’re a curly eyebrow girlie like me, I’m about to change your life! I hadn’t heard of eyebrow lamination either but my bestie @caras_atl eyebrows were always looking . So she put me on to getting mine laminated and I swear my eyebrows have never looked better! You get a solution put on that is smoothed in and then your eyebrows are brushed and then left to set. This literally relaxes your brow hairs so they lay flat. I chose to also have mine dyed so Alissa expertly filled them in a little with eyebrow dye and VOILA! It’s amazing how something so small can give your whole face a glow up! What to expect to at your 20 week OB appointment: 1️⃣ An ultrasound! Your 20-week screening scan looks in detail at the baby’s bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys and abdomen. It allows the sonographer to look for 11 rare conditions. You also find out the sex of your baby! Did we get our ultrasound at our 20 week appointment? Nope. Even though Kim is already 22 weeks. Why? They rescheduled her appointment (because she had a runny nose) and didn’t think to make sure they booked her for a day that their ultrasound tech was in. The biggest reason we chose to use the same donor again was connecting with Breslyn’s donor siblings. After we had Breslyn, we used the donor sibling registry offered by @cryobank and found out that Breslyn had 4 siblings! (That number has since grown!) We connected through their website and developed a great relationship with her bio sibs and their parents. Last year we took the kids on a vacation to Disney and have another sibling meet up planned later this year. Two of Breslyn’s siblings and their moms were just at her birthday party a few weeks ago (the 1st pic) Our original plan was that I would use a Korean donor to conceive and that Kim would use a Black donor when it was her turn. Our original goal was to create a family that physically mirrored both of our ethnicities. We wanted them to both be able to navigate the world as Black & Korean. When we chose Breslyn’s donor, we chose one who agreed to release their information to Breslyn when she turned 18. We wanted to give our daughter the opportunity to make that connection if she wanted to. After Breslyn was born and we connected with her siblings, we reevaluated what was most important to our family. If we used another donor, our second child might miss out on having that same opportunity, experience and/or connection with their donor siblings. Our concern about them navigating the world with a shared sense of ethnicity became concern about them navigating the world with a shared sense of “family”. Choosing to connect with donor siblings is a very personal decision. We did so thinking family is whatever you make of it. Our daughter now has more people who love her and we have more support than we could’ve dreamed of. When our kids are older, they can decide just like everyone else what relatives they want to remain close to and which ones they don’t. But we can say that we did our best to put them in a position to know who they are, who they’re related to and to know that we loved them and did our very best. Have you heard of donor siblings? My wife had to adopt HER OWN CHILD! Two years ago we had to go to court so that Kim could legally adopt her own daughter. We planned that pregnancy together. We picked the donor together. We went through IVF together, and my wife was the first person to hold her when she was born. We are both listed as Breslyn’s parents on her birth certificate. But in order for both of us to have FULL PARENTAL RIGHTS we had to do second parent adoption. Because a birth certificate is not enough to guarantee your rights as a parent. It is considered an administrative document which is governed by the laws of the state. Which means when Kim gives birth to our baby boy, I will have to legally adopt my own child. Even if we’re both on the birth certificate, even though we planned this pregnancy together, even though we’re married. It’s 2024 but we have seen protections for LGBTQ+ people and women roll back in the last few years. So it’s important to make sure your family is protected. I still have to look up the legal process in Georgia as it differs from state to state and even county to county. So I’ll keep everyone posted as we go through the process!
