I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and it is definitely a gumbo pot of culture and diversity. Although we are taught of our rich heritage and contributions to society, as we grow, racism still rears its ugly head. As a mom, it’s difficult to imagine your child having to deal with the stereotypes, microaggressions and prejudices based on their skin tone. I have learned that kids truly want to be kids and our society unfortunately changes that for them. My role as a parent is to teach them about those that came before them and the huge impacts they have made on our community. I use the holidays to create traditions from our family and culture to ensure they message sticks with them. I’m thankful to be homeschooling, as we can take time to learn about other cultures and when their little minds have questions we can take a deep dive into the answer. About a week ago, I woke up to some cramping, contractions, bleeding and clots. I tried to rationalize it as another hematoma that possibly wasn’t shown. However as the pain started to become more patterned and get worse just as fast, I knew it was something more. I waited a couple hours as my doctor had a 12:30 availability but the contractions becoming timeable 5 minutes apart are hard to ignore. At only 18 weeks, I could hear the concern in my nurse’s voice. She wouldn’t even hang up to call me back, she wanted me to hold. I was told to go to Labor and Delivery. Having been told our tests came back positive for trisomy 18 the thought of this journey being over weighed heavily on my heart. To our relief, our baby was sucking it’s thumb and practicing to become a gymnast. The culprit was a fibroid. I have never had so much relief and fear at one time in my life. I thank God that our journey is not over and we have time to fight and heal. Unfortunately their isn’t much treatment but NSAIds and rest. In addition, there have been some cervical changes on ultrasound. So I have to take that into consideration. As stated previously, black women are 50% more likely to have a miscarriage and we are 25% of black women have fibroids compared to white women with only 6% percent. As a health care professional, I share my story to not only educate, but to build trust with you so that you know you are not alone. You are not just a statistic. Today is Monday 2.0. Mama is tired. Pregnancy is still kicking my butt. I wake up at least every two hours to potty. Not to mention that round ligament pain is starting. That doesn’t include the other symptoms. So that all make one exhausted mama. I’m not going to sugarcoat it but I won’t complain as I have made it to actually scheduling my anatomy scan.
