The main village of Lake Placid sits right along beautiful Mirror Lake, which is a much smaller lake than Lake Placid itself but offers lots of fun year-round. We have some favorite hikes in Lake Placid that are perfect for families: Hiking in Lake Placid with Kids. The best public place to swim in Lake Placid is at the Lake Placid Public Beach. Hands down the best place to stay in Lake Placid with kids is The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort.
We have been exploring smaller mountains all throughout the Adirondack State Park, and have a few favorite easier mountains right in Lake Placid. Although Mt. Van Hovenburg was a bit longer than Mt. Jo in distance, it also offered an amazing view of the high peaks. The views at the top of Mount Van Hovenburg were pretty spectacular and similar to Mount Jo since you are staring at the same high peaks. The view at the top of Cobble Hill is not as amazing as some other hikes in the area, but you still get a great view of Mirror Lake and into Lake Placid.
West Mountain is located less than 20 minutes south of Lake George, making it a great place to spend a day when your family is visiting the southern Adirondacks. One of the most accessible things for all to enjoy at West Mountain in the summer is the scenic chairlift ride and hiking trails. Some of the adventures at West Mountain summer camp include hiking, climbing, and organized physical activities outside with other kids! A perfect place for those visiting the Lake George area and want to take a break from hiking in Lake George, West offers some unique views and fun outdoor adventures for everyone!
There are many different options on places to stay or camp in the area, but one of the best places to stay in Old Forge is the Great Pines Resort. Great Pines Resort is located directly on Fourth Lake and is almost halfway between the towns of Old Forge and Inlet, NY. The Lean-To is not only a popular eatery for those arriving on land, but you can dock your boat right at The Great Pines Resort, and come up to the Lean-To for a meal, and a nice cold beverage! One of the most popular things to do in Old Forge in the winter is to go snowmobiling, and if you are staying at the Great Pines Resort you can snowmobile right to your room!
