From aquatics to citrus to floral scents, there are different scents to choose from, but how can one select the fragrance that speaks volumes about themselves? If you have a favorite dish that you love, there’s an 80% chance that you also like the food’s smell. You may come across terms like Eau De Parfum, Eau De Toilette, Eau De Cologne, and Parfum. There are different musk scents such as black musk, and cashmere musk that has an exotic smell.
The world’s first recorded chemist was actually a Mesopotamian woman well-practiced in the art of perfumery: Tapputi-Belatekallim was the earliest known practitioner of the distillation process, which she used to extract and combine aromatics to cultivate the scent she desired. Here’s a fun fact (that’s actually quite important): cologne isn’t a gendered term outside of English-speaker colloquialisms. The technical term is eau de cologne, a light concentration of two to four percent that generally lasts for a few hours unless you freshen up—which you can actually do with an eau fraiche, an extremely low concentration of one to three percent that’s mostly diluted with water. : there’s going to a clothing store with the basic concept of needing clothes, and there’s going in actively looking for business casual shirts.
While there certainly aren’t a trillion words in use to describe these smells, the human brain subconsciously captures them and responds to their scent profiles through physical and psychological means. Smelling good isn’t something that’s talked about so much for the men in the world, but it’s never too late to learn! Citrus rinds, for example, can handle the intense pressure of the expression process—but that’s about the only material for which it’s worth the risk. Raw materials are introduced to a solvent that dissolves the aromatic compounds; the resulting extract is processed to separate the solvent, processing for anywhere from a few hours to a few months. From these processes, we’re able to extract aromatic compounds that are diluted in a solvent (usually ethyl alcohol) in order to create a proper fragrance.
