Wine tastings here, wine tastings there, wine tastings everywhere! ☀️ I love a blind wine tasting, it’s truly the best way to learn wine but put a game to it and now you’re talking. We joined @wtso and @sommify last night for a 4 bottle blind tasting led by @the.wine.rebel and about 70 other folks around the country. We ended up tasting an Italian Chianti Classico, Australian Cabernet, Spanish Tempranillo and Sonoma Pinot Noir and thanks to some help with Marc (especially on one) we called them all! Gather ‘round for story time (post 4/however many it takes) Needless to say over the years I’ve been to a lot of wine tastings and like anything, some were fantastic and some were, let’s just say sub par. So when I expanded See Jane Drink Wine to wine tastings, I made a commitment to use my prep and presentation skills I gained during my long career in sales to my tastings. That starts when I listen to what the group is looking to explore and assuring what I choose are fresh picks that will please their style. Then I spend literally HOURS researching the wines, regions, wineries, sometimes interviewing people of the wineries to create a fascinating story that bring additional flavor to the whole learning experience. But you can have a good story and be boring 🥱 so you better be experienced and know how to work the room. ⛔️ And hell no, you’ll never see me bring notes to read from, I come prepared like a boss. Let's get down to business. (post 3/however many it takes) So I've been a wine enthusiast since my first visit to the Napa Valley in 2001. Since then, I've traveled domestically and internationally visiting wine regions learning about the region, grapes and my favorite part, the people behind it all. Having children slowed my travel down quite a bit but I still found time to visit wine country once a year. But 2020 halted that so as an outlet I decided to take my field research to the classroom and start taking the WSET courses through @napavalleywineacademy After 500 flashcards and hours of studying I passed WSET Level 2 with Distinction (their highest ranking) I was getting asked, "what will you do with it?" I didn't have an answer but I knew it would eventually come to me. Before having kids my career was in Sales/Advertising which simply means I like to talk. So why not talk about wine? See Jane Drink Wine grew beyond the Instagram account and became 3D in backyards, event spaces & private clubs teaching people the art of wine. I am completely independent of any winery, company or brand so fully customize tastings based on the group's style and what they want to explore. This month, I did my 50th wine tasting in the mere 12 months I've been in business (I'm counting the virtual ones, too) and I've never felt more "in place" in my life. It's still in infancy. (post 2/however many it takes) A mere 5 weeks after having that baby and a week after launching my Instagram account (though briefly named The Whiny Wino) one of my very bests since age 4 came to visit with her husband. They were unsure if the train would let them bring wine on so they wrapped a case of wine in Christmas wrapping paper...in July. Not suspicious at all. And I love they came thoroughly prepared. That's how they do! Over the course of the long weekend, we drank wine so I could "post" and that we did and there's few people I enjoy drinking wine with more than this gem of a human. Champagne and croquet was born that weekend and we talked and dreamed how one day we'll visit the Willamette Valley together which we eventually did in 2018. At this point I was still documenting the wines I liked with no other direction. Shortly after this, I changed the name of the account to See Jane Drink Wine to play off the old Dick & Jane books we learned how to read from. Wanna know how it all started? (post 1/however many it takes) Almost 5 years ago I was feeding my newborn in the middle of the night feeling like I'd never be able to travel to wine country again nor have the capacity to remember wines I tried and liked so I turned to Instagram to be my wine diary. This photo was my first post from way back when @conncreekwinery taken circa 2010 (ish). Many have said when they close their eyes, they see me exactly like this and that’s how I wanted to remember myself in that seemingly far, far away past life. Hours later when I woke up (I'm sure 2-3 hours thanks to newborns) I had several hundred followers and thought, why? Who are these people? Why do they want to "follow" me? Then as IG evolved, I was making these virtual friends and some of those have grown into non-virtual friendships which I had no idea that would ever happen, but here we are. Cellar management is so fulfilling for me because as mundane as it sounds, each has its own goals and problems to solve. Every person uses their wine collection differently - this client buys wine to drink not to cellar long-term but continues to be stumped as to which bottle to pull when. They base their pulls on value of the wine so I decided that’s how we’ll sort it, from low to high with cost, varietal and region so they can pull whatever is in the range and type they’re feeling. Coming up on my 3rd day of leading a wine tasting, I wouldn't think I'd be this excited for tonight but these 15 women requested a preview of the Willamette Valley before their upcoming girls trip - what a fun way to wet that whistle. Many think this region is just pinot-land so we'll be exploring a beautiful pinot gris and my very favorite Chardonnay before we swan dive into some best pinots the land has to offer. Production of each wine ranges from 70 cases to 500 and each also have a strong women-influence whether it be female-owned, female winemaker or female run. Additionally, they all have low-intervention practices, organic, biodynamic, all the important stuff so this tasting pretty much checks all the boxes.
