There was a period in my abuelas life when she was very close to the social activist, attorney, Harvard grad, nationalist we all come to know as a true legend. When he was thrown in jail for his activism, when he fell ill, my grandmother had his back. The loyalty was real. ✊🏾 The philanthropy work my friends, family, members of the community and the true lovers of our island have made me so proud to be Puerto Rican. Last week around this time, the cast, crew & I of Outside-In were gearing up to open the doors @lincolncenter for an experience from the Emmy Nominated and 2x Clio Award winning team behind Disney’s “Growing Up” and MTV’s “Rebel Music,” presented by The Child Center of NY and produced by Soulhouse in honor of National Children’s #mentalhealthawareness Month. Everyone involved was so talented & awesome to work with. 🫶🏼 If you missed it, here’s a recap: “Outside In” was and is more than just a play, it’s an immersive theatrical event where the audience doesn’t just watch but may actively participate. The two-hour production blends scripted performance with improvisation so audiences can experience the inner workings of maya, an 18-year-old living in new york city during the digital age. May 7th sparked fundraising through the arts for the community innovation lab. A core methodology of the lab is harnessing the science of play to develop public mental health services and programs. Last week was rough but as usual, my autopilot button was on. It’s how I cope when times get heavy.
