I want to share my why. I grew up in a school district that got it right. They believed in equitable, inclusive education. As an elementary student I was exposed to students that were different, that learned different, that looked different, and because of this exposure I had a desire to work with students with disabilities. Along the way I had examples of amazing educators who loved what they did and advocated for their students, and I wanted to be that. Here we are today and I just finished my 5th year of teaching. THIS HAS TO STOP.... 18 children won't be having class parties and enjoying the start of summer this week. How are we here? How are we still allowing this to happen? How are we all so desensitized as Americans and educators that what happened today in Texas does not have us all in tears? I don't have the words but all I wanted to say this I will do whatever it takes as a teacher to help prevent this doesn't happen in the future. How is it that in 2022 we haven't progressed past a month dedicated to awareness and acceptance of something that affects 1 in every 44 children in the US? We expect Autistic people to conform to what we think is “normal.” We ask them to adapt to our world, but have we ever tried to adapt to theirs? As an educator in 2022, I resonated so much with this @elarroyo_atx sign. As educators, we come to love and teach and bring the “the good.” It’s easy to feel like we aren’t doing enough, being enough, and I’m here to tell you YOU ARE ENOUGH. We have all gone through a rough two years, and it’s brocken a majority of us. It's shattered our already broken education system, a breaking I honestly don’t know if we can come back from, but with just two months of school left, please remember that your “good” is enough!
