Have you heard of the Gimnyeong Craft Metal Mural Village (김녕금속공예벽화마을) in Jeju? If you're trying to walk along the entire Jeju Olle-gil, at the beginning of course 20, you may notice a collection of 29 metalworks that tell the story of the Jeju divers. Even if you're not completing the entire course, this area makes for a great leisurely walk. Have kids? It's a fun scavenger hunt like adventure trying to spot all of the metalworks along the way with great seaside views too. Where To Start Gimnyeong Seopo-gu Stamp Spot (김녕서포구 스탬프찍는곳): Here is where you can take in the coast and the lava rocks first, get a stamp if you’re collecting them for the entire Olle-gil course and start your meander through the town. Address: 4070 Gimnyeong-ri, Gujwa-eub, Jeju-si, Jeju (제주 제주시 구좌읍 김녕리 4070) There's more information on www.thesoulofseoul.net Follow @thesoulofseoulblog for more tips for travel in South Korea #김녕금속공예벽화마을 #제주 #traveljeju #jejuisland

Monsoon season, rainy season, whatever you want to call it, when the skies open up, even your best umbrella won’t help you stay dry. My tips for rainy season in Korea: - Wear quick-dry clothing because no matter what you do, you will get wet. Wet jeans suck! @uniqlo always has great dresses, pants, and shorts that quick-dry in the summer. - Wear water-resistant shoes. Either go boots or sandals but don’t wear any shoes that could get ruined with an onslaught of water. - Convenience stores sell umbrellas and ponchos when you’re in a pinch and it suddenly started raining while you were out and about. You could end up with quite the collection of umbrellas because of this so get them multicolored so you can match the care you’re headed to 😂🤣 - Some places in Seoul flood every year during monsoon season, Gangnam for example, try to steer clear of low areas of the city when the rains really pour. One year even higher ground Hongdae was so flooded, the water breached the bus floor I was in. Don’t panic, but stay safe and do heed warnings surrounding torrential downpours and possible flooding. In Korea the three hottest days of summer are referred to as sambok (삼복) or boknal (복날). Covering the span of a month, the three hottest days of the summer were traditionally a holiday for the farmers. This year, the dates to watch out for are: - Chobok (초복) on July 15, 2024. - Jungbok (중복) on July 25, 2024. - Malbok (말복) on August 14, 2024. What to eat: Samgyetang (삼계탕) Ginseng chicken stew is probably the most popular dish on the hottest days of the summer. Served in a hot bowl about to boil over, one small tender chicken stuffed with rice sits in the broth with ginseng, garlic and jujube dates. Other popular options include Jangeo (장어), or eel which is rich in vitamin A and E and said to stimulate blood circulation. If you don’t want something so hot though, Korea has a number of cold soups too including: Kongguksu (콩국수), Kongguksu (콩국수), Mul Naengmyeon (물 냉면). And of course, there’s always patbingsu. When you adventure in Korea, what do you seek? I'm all about finding the natural wonders but equally interested in the architectural gems and among them are a collection of architect Tadao Ando’s buildings including well known Museum San. That’s not the only one though. Buildings Designed by Tadao Ando in Korea: - LG Art Center (LG아트센터 서울) - Museum San (뮤지엄산) - Glass House (글라스하우스) - Yumin Gallery (유민미술관) - Bonte Museum (본태박물관) - Church of the Heart (마음의교회) - JCC Art Center (JCC아트센터) How many of these places have you visited? Save this post so you can find them later! Tea House recommendations in the Insadong/Bukchon area. I was recently asked to recommend some tea houses for a tourist and decided to share what I sent. Of course, there are so many tea houses in Seoul and around Korea, but as a tourist, this is an area you’ll likely be in already so here are some good tea houses to look for: - Tea Therapy (티테라피): 6-1 Anguk-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울 종로구 안국동 6-1) - The Beautiful Tea Museum: Jongno-gu Insadong 9-gil 193-1 (서울 종로구 인사동9길 193-1) - Cha Masineun Tteul (차 마시는 뜰): 26 Bukchon-ro 11na-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 종로구 북촌로11나길 26) -O’Sulloc Tea House Bukchon (오설록 티하우스 북촌점): 45 Bukchon-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울 종로구 북촌로 45) - The 47th Street Tea House (47번가찻집): 47-9 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울 종로구 인사동길 47-9) Have you visited a tea house in Seoul? If you’re looking down at your phone while you walk, you’ll miss the gorilla sitting right above you. Have you found the Toy Market street in Seoul? Toys and toys and toys at wholesale prices along Jongno 52-Gil. If you’re headed to Dongmyo for the antiques and clothes, stop along the you street too. Just remember to look up to spot the gorilla! #동묘 #seoulshopping #shoppinginseoul #동대문

When you’re traveling in the countryside of Korea, finding a good place to eat can seem daunting, especially if you have kids or picky eaters. My biggest tip to parents, vegetarians, and other travelers that just don‘t know where to start, look for the local boribap restaurant. Boribap (보리밥) comes out with barley rice in a bowl surrounded with a plethora of local seasonal vegetables. Add what you like and top it off with the gochujang chili paste or doenjang. Everyone can create their own combination which means everyone will have something to eat. The reason I like it though, it’s always fresh and local so wherever you go, it‘s a great option to find and every place, even in the heart of Seoul too, has a boribap restaurant. What I love about Seoul is that you can go from a traditional tea house to a trending culture space. Walk through palace courtyards and then find futuristic media art. If you're like me but traveling and don't even know where to begin planning a trip to Seoul, I put together 15 itineraries with the must-see iconic landmarks with my favorite gems in between. Most travelers just don't realize how big Seoul is and make the mistake of trying to see Gangnam and Hongdae, or something like that, in the same day. You know what you will see if you do that? Mostly the subway. I created 15 itineraries with no overlapping sites on any of them that are mostly completely walkable. See Seoul the way I see Seoul. Food is central to much of the celebrations in Korea whether it’s festivals or family rituals. This month is Dano (단오) which marks the end of the rice sowing season. Believed to be filled with positive yang energy, Dano is a lively celebration of song, dance and wine. It is the third most traditional holiday behind Seollal and Chuseok. The food to eat on this holiday is surichuitteok (수리취떡), a steamed rice cake made with young surigot leaves, or wormwood mixed with buckwheat flour dough. The round, flat rice cake is stamped with cartwheel-shaped pattern. Eaten on the day of the festival, the rice cake is meant to bring good health and protect against bad luck. Seodaemun Natural History Museum: Educational Fun In Seoul – The Soul of Seoul

What To Do & See Nestled up into Ansan Mountain where it’s definitely easy for most people to miss is a great spot to take kids to learn about natural history. There is the ‘Harmony of Human and Nature in the Beautiful Seoul’ section to learn about ecosystems and then there is ‘The Birth and Evolution of Life and the Diversity of Living Creatures’ where the dinosaurs reside and that leads into the origin of humans and animals. It’s also right on Ansan Mountain which means you can easily take a little walk around the mountain which is an easy one for kids as well since it has a wooden pathway that circles the mountain. Existing in the Early Cretaceous period (between 115 and 105 million years ago), Acrocanthosaurus is a genus of the family Allosauridae, approaching 9 to 12 meters in length and weighing 2 to 4 tons.

Bar 81: The Largest Champagne Collection In Asia Is HERE In Seoul! – The Soul of Seoul

Bar 81 in Signiel Hotel, the tallest hotel in Korea, is the experience you need to have this year. Whether you drive or take a subway or bus, you need to go to the first floor of Seoul Sky Tower and find the specific elevators that go up to Signiel Hotel. I had the opportunity to visit Signiel Hotel last year to write an article on it for Forbes Travel Guide but just didn’t have enough time to experience everything that the hotel has to offer. If you want something fun to do indoors on a rainy day, or you just love aquariums and want something easy to get to in the building, then definitely check out the massive Lotte World Aquarium.

How To File Taxes While Abroad: Taxes For American Expats – The Soul of Seoul

Since you’re abroad, you actually get an extension on filing, but you absolutely still need to file your American taxes while living abroad. What’s the difference between excluding foreign earned income and taking the foreign earned income credit? According to the IRS, If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living or traveling outside the United States, you generally are required to file income tax returns, estate tax returns, and gift tax returns and pay estimated tax in the same way as those residing in the United States. FBAR stands for Foreign Bank Account Reports and all US citizens and green card holders who have $10,000 or more, in aggregate, in accounts outside of the US at any time during the tax year, must file an FBAR online or have someone file a FinCEN Form 114 as your behalf if you have a service doing it for you.
