I specialize in Whiskey, and have for over 7 years, but I love all things boozy and foody.
There are bad labels and then there's this nonsense from @kinseywhiskey. $50 for a 2-year-old mystery whiskey. F&*^ no. Before digging in I will give them credit for saying it's sourced, but it's all downhill from there and are a shining example of why you should avoid bourbon that isn't labeled as Straight. The front says it's a Pennsylvania Classic, the back talks about honesty, but it's sourced and there is no state of Distillation listed. Probably because showing its from Indiana, and other states, negates the whole PA claim. The missing info definitely negates the honesty one. I have an email chain from last year where I questioned them on another product and they admitted to using distillate from other distilleries, their own distillate, and employing used cooperage. None of which is mentioned on their label or their site. After I quoted the TTB and BAM specs they went silent. Honesty eh? I'm submitting a formal complaint to the TTB and if you find yourself bored why not take a minute and do the same? If we all start calling out and reporting bad labels then maybe, just maybe, the TTB will start enforcing their own laws and give less wiggle room for bad labels, and shady products, like this in the market. ___________ . . . . . #Kinsey #Bourbon #BourbonEnthusiast #BourbonWhiskey #BourbonGram #BourbonPorn #BourbonLover #BourbonCountry #BourbonLife #InstaBourbon #Whiskey #InstaWhiskey #WhiskeyTasting #WhiskeyLife #WhiskeyLove #Whiskeygram #WhiskeyLover #Instadrink #Instadram #WhiskeyPorn #WhiskeyWriter #WhiskyFabric #WhiskeyPhoto #WhiskeyCollector #WhiskeyCollection #WhiskeyNation #Viski #WhiskeyReview #WhiskeyPorn #Dram
Three-Word Summary: Smoky fruity cocoa. Sweet and fruity with smoky hints that open to a candy sweetness that reminds me of Twix and best of all… no Bowmore funk. Moreso than other distilleries, Bowmore seems to have two profiles, an OB and an IB and I tend to like the IB profile far more than the OB because the beauty of most IB Bowmores is they don’t taste like “Bowmores”. IB Bowmores, especially ex-Bourbon ones like this 1997 First Editions Bowmore 14 Years, can be incredibly tasty because that signature funk is rarely found. Three-Word Summary: Malty fruity cocoa. Every Glenburgie I’ve had has been a decent at the low and damn tasty at the high. None have blown me away, but they’re (almost) always satisfying. And that’s the adjective I’ve been looking for: satisfying. It perfectly scratches that un-peated scotch itch in a warm and fruity way. And speaking of fruit. The more this whisky opens the more fruit arrives. A splash of water will accelerate it, but even just taking your time, slowly working your way through a glass brings out a more multifaceted fruit profile and a bit more cocoa. 1995 Signatory Glenburgie 19 is a great sipping whisky and while this exact one might be long gone, it’s a distillery to keep your eye out for and take a chance on if you haven’t already. Three-word Summary: Malty cocoa sherry. I give Trader Joe’s whisky a lot of crap, all of it very much deserved. But I’m also the first to admit that sometimes they get gems and this… this is a gem of the first order. I can’t believe this is a TJ whisky. It has depth, it has character, it tastes like a sherried Scotch and, most importantly, it doesn’t suck! In fact, the Trader Joe’s Highland Single Malt Sherry Cask sucks so little, and is so dang affordable, I’m wishing I could go back and get more, make it my “house scotch” for a little while. But alas, the TJ’s in DC don’t stock hard liquor, just beer and wine. But if they did, I wouldn’t hesitate a second to pick up one, or two, more. Three-word summary: Earthy fruity malt. Elegant and subtle, this is a whisky I could, have, and do, sit and sip for an evening. It’s a complex and interesting whisky that shifts from earthy to sweet and back again and shows the beauty of Laddie’s multi-cask blending. Sometimes there are winey-like notes, sometimes more honeyed fruit, other times a bit more cereal sweetness or earthy grainy notes and sometimes a bit more oak spice peeking through. Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011 is tasty and definitley worth exploring. Three-word Summary: Light meh malt. Meh. Bear Fight American Single Malt is just plain… meh. It has a few flaws, it has a few, minor, nice aspects. But what it doesn’t have is a deeply pleasant profile. Or even an overall pleasant one. Could it eventually get better? Possibly, but not likely. It’s more likely the unnamed source they get it from keeps making it like this and they “process” it to be like this and it remains meh. For my money, I’ll stick with some of the already stellar American Single Malts being put out by folks like Stranahan’s, Westward, Westland, Balcones and Virginia Distillery. Not only are the products from those distilleries significantly better than this Bear Fight American Single Malt, but the consumer (you and I) have the knowledge of where the whiskey came from and the “process” it went through: distilled on their premises and aged in oak casks on the same. I think the next bit of market research Next Century Spirits needs to do is in brand trust because anyone who knows how to read a label and search the internet should have zero interest in this. Three-word Summary: Artificial caramel pastry. The only American Whiskey I can think of that’s worse than this is Seagram’s 7, and that’s not saying much. This is a harsh, chemically, weirdly sweet mess whose absence from the market obviously hasn’t been mourned too heavily. As it opens, slowly, a yeasty note arrives and gives it a weird, almost moldy, bready note. Combine that with the artificial caramel note and you end up with something that makes me think of a bad caramel pastry. If you see a bottle of this Hiram Walker Imperial Blended Whiskey gathering dust on a shelf, you might consider leaving it there. Three-word Summary: Smoked candied fruit. This is one of the best batches of Campfire I’ve had in a while. It’s led by the peated Scotch, and while it does sit heavy, it’s balanced out with the rye and bourbon notes floating through. It’s subtly complex and that Scotch heaviness is not a bad thing here… so long as you like peated Scotch. If you don’t like peated whisky, then you should avoid the Campfire series as a whole, but if you enjoy it, and also enjoy American Whiskey, then this is a great hybrid drinker that will satisfy both sides. The High West Campfire Batch 22F29 also makes one heck of a Blood and Sand, FYI. Three-word Summary: Rye finished port. This is my least favorite of the series I’ve had and is a surprising shift from how good Act 9 was. After trying Act 9 at a buddy’s house at Thanksgiving of 2021 I went looking and came up empty-handed. So I was excited when I found this Act 10 in the wild last year and after opening it, and then quickly disappointed. I’ve been taking periodic tastes hoping it would improve, but sadly it hasn’t. It’s cloying, the rye notes are low quality and feel young with a spirity note whispering through. I was looking forward to this High West Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 10 Scene 6 because of releases like Act 3, Act 2.9, and Act 9 but unfortunately, this isn’t even close. Three-word Summary: 95/5 MGP rye. There are no surprises in this movie, it’s a tale that’s been told a million times and in that vein, it’s not a bad thing. It’s a story we know well, we’re comfortable with, and turn to when we want something familiar and reliable. No twists, no surprise endings, just a well-crafted reliable script and they’re completely upfront about it. The one thing that does separate this from others though is the design. While we might be reading a well-tread story here, it was done with impeccable taste, attention to detail, no BS about it being made for mountain men, and, of course, a gorgeous aesthetic. Have I mentioned I like the design? Three-word Summary: Bright herbal butterscotch. I’m a bit surprised this is only 2.5 years old, with the profile I would have put it closer to 4. It’s not a heavy oaky rye, but it is a flavorful crisp rye that doesn’t have any of that crafty raw wood smell or taste to it. Not mature, but not under-developed either and it ends up having a fresh character to it. It’ll be interesting to see how the Sagamore Penny’s Proof changes over the years as this line continues to age and mature and as they start blending into whatever will become the signature profile. This is a product to watch. Three-word Summary: MGP dilly rye. It tastes like a 2-3 year old MGP rye. It’s not bad, but it’s also something that is so pervasive and can be found by any number of labels at any number of price points because they’re all getting their whiskey from MGP. This is the reason I don’t buy most NDP whiskey, it’s just MGP in a different bottle and the biggest differentiation between them all is just the story they tell about it. Three-word Summary: Oaky dark fruit. This is some good ole bourbon. Oaky, semi-heavy, but balanced, profile that drives through the senses with complexity and nuance. This is something I would reach for over and over again. This is a darn good bourbon, but that shouldn’t be a surprise. This is a 14-year-old high-rye MGP, which is my favorite of the MGP bourbon mashes. So of course this is going to be delicious, but the whiskey source isn’t what they tout, it’s the CO water and I’m going to say the hype is just that. I cut some cask-strength 10-year-old high-rye MGP from Redemption with some DC water poured from my Brita and they were unsurprisingly similar in quality. Because, you know, it’s the same whiskey. The Tincup Fourteener Bourbon Whiskey is just 4 years older and 30% easier on the wallet, which these days is nice to see. Three-word summary: Sweet and grassy. Reminds me a bit of Wathen’s SiB with that grassy note. It’s not the same fresh corn profile as the Wathen’s, but it has elements of that in the sweetness and freshness to the whiskey. This is unique and I truly appreciate something that doesn’t taste like everything else. As the Frey Ranch Quad Malt Bourbon opens is gets more complex and more interesting with that grassy note going from dominant to heavy but balanced which gives all the other sweet and earthy notes something to revolve around. A super interesting whiskey. SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)
Three-word summary: Spicy sweet grass. This one reminds me a LOT of the Wathens with that heavy fresh corn grassy note across the palate and finish. Though I’m kind of shocked it never showed up on the nose. Even with some water, air and time I never got that grassy note on the nose. I know this kind of profile is conflicting in the bourbon world. Some people like it, a lot of people don’t, but I happen to love it when I get that fresh, grassy quality. Especially when it’s balanced with a nice oakiness like it is in this Frey Ranch 100% Malted Corn Bourbon SCORE: 3.5/5 (tasty, worth checking out ~ B | 83-86) ___________ Use link in bio for more details and extensive review. ___________ . . . . . #Frey #Bourbon #BourbonEnthusiast #BourbonWhiskey #BourbonGram #BourbonPorn #BourbonLover #BourbonCountry #BourbonLife #InstaBourbon #Whiskey #InstaWhiskey #WhiskeyTasting #WhiskeyLife #WhiskeyLove #Whiskeygram #WhiskeyLover #Instadrink #Instadram #WhiskeyPorn #WhiskeyWriter #WhiskyFabric #WhiskeyPhoto #WhiskeyCollector #WhiskeyCollection #WhiskeyNation #Viski #WhiskeyReview #WhiskeyPorn #Dram
