I can’t go out *cough cough* I’m sick… Sometimes I just wanna be a lazy bones and play video games all day, mkay? And hey, you know what - I deserve it. YOU deserve it. Relaxing vacation with kids? Never met her. Don’t get me wrong, I love going to new places with my kids and seeing their faces when they’re making core memories. They’re the lights of my life. Love that for us. However, when I think of the word “vacation”, it usually goes along with “relaxation” and “rest” and “mid-day naps” (yes, I mean naps for me). Those things don’t generally happen when kiddos are around. Vacation with kids? Literally the same exact chaos that we get at home, but in a new place - plus throw some memories in the mix. Sir, how dare you??? I am the world’s lightest sleeper of all time. Seriously. I wake up every time I roll over in bed. No lie. But when my kids snore, it doesn’t bother me at all. “It’s okay not to be okay” has its limits. My story with depression is a long one. I don’t remember not feeling some level of depression. Whenever I would feel joy, it felt foreign to me, like something was looming in the darkness ready to take it away. I honestly don’t know who I am without it. I think I took comfort in the fact that this was something entirely consistent in my life. I knew what to expect and how to manage the world around me. I learned how to mask and hide my depression. I got so good at it that people in my life don’t really know how bad it’s gotten. Truthfully, I don’t think I let myself realize how bad it’s gotten until recently. “I don’t want to be here anymore” That’s the phrase that replayed over and over in my head one morning. It wouldn’t stop. I felt suffocated. Trapped in my own head. My kids were in the playroom and I was in the kitchen hiding my sobs and panic. It took e v e r y t h i n g in me to not listen to that voice in my head. I’ve gained just enough self awareness to know that even though those voices are loud af, they’re liars. I was able to break out of that panicked state long enough to ask for help, and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Sometimes, it’s not okay to not be okay. I always thought if I worked through my trauma, the depression would go away. Just a few more therapy sessions. That’s all I needed. I felt like I didn’t deserve to go on medication - that other people had it worse than I did, so I had to stick it out. I realize now how completely stupid that was. It’s been two weeks since I started Zoloft and while it’s had its ups and downs, I am grateful to finally be on this path. I’m scared to figure out who I am without the burden of depression, but I’m also excited. I deserve to know that person, and so does my family. My kids deserve a mom who takes care of herself. If you relate to any part of this, first of all, I’m so sorry you do. Depression blows. It’s loud & strong & heavy & most of all, a liar. You deserve to live your life fully and without the burden of depression. If you have any questions about my journey or how it’s going on medication, please don’t hesitate to ask. 💙
