There's more than 400 parks in the system that make for a great trip. Last year we visited Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia. We love going to this park because of the views and great hiking trails. Winter has arrived to the East Coast!! As the first #snow falls across the capital region it's time to venture out and enjoy all that winter has to offer. We tried getting back into skiing this year and took our chance at snowboarding nearby at Liberty Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania. It was an easy ride about 1.5 hours outside of the DC region aka the #DMV and fun for a day trip. We took our first #snowboard lesson and loved being on the bunny slopes, because let's face it we spent more time falling in the snow than snowboarding 😂😂😂 but had a great time! It's located in Old Town Alexandria, easily accessible by the Old Town trolley and DASH buses, both of which are free. It's ℕ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 ℂ𝕠𝕗𝕗𝕖𝕖 𝔻𝕒𝕪 today and while we love to make coffee at home, sometimes we need something different and venture out to neighborhood coffee shops. Today we're highlighting a few of our favorite places in Virginia to grab a cup of joe ahead of your weekend brunches. ꜰʀᴀᴍᴇ (@framecoffee) recently made it on our list for one of our favorite spots in Vienna! Located in along the main strip, ironically next to an optometrist's office, this cute shop has coffee and a great breakfast menu. Keep in mind though the kitchen closes at least 1 hour before closing. 𝐈𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐬 (@ididoscoffeesocial), located in South Arlington right off of Colombia Pike is the perfect place to grab your coffee on a Sunday morning before heading out to the Colombia Pike Farmers Market. We got their iced dirty chai on a hot day in the summer. While we're not a fan of iced coffee this one hit the spot as it was creamy frothy goodness that went along with our egg, bacon and cheese sandwich. The ᴛᴜʀᴋɪꜱʜ ᴄᴏꜰꜰᴇᴇ ʟᴀᴅʏ ( @turkishcoffeelady)! Cute shop located in Old Town Alexandria. Here we tried the Cappadocia, a tiny shot of espresso with cardamom flavor, sweet enough to enjoy on a relaxing Sunday morning. If you have traveled to Brazil lately you might have remembered the visa requirements were originally waived in 2019, well that will all change on October 1. Rumor has it that the application and issuance of the visa will be done electronically but we haven't seen the electronic system yet. In any case if you're traveling past October 1, be sure to apply for the visa which is currently $160 for a stay up to 90 days. U.S. travelers are not the only travelers affected by the new rule, it also goes into effect for Canadians and Australians! Once again yesterday's storms wreaked havoc up and down the East Coast as a storm rolled through leaving fallen trees and power outages in its wake. Tornado warnings were even issued for the East Coast including DC and Philadephia. As is usual with these weather patterns several flights were canceled. If you check Flightaware today you'd see about 1700 flights were canceled within, into or out of the U.S yesterday and not to mention about 9K flight delays. All these weather events bring home the need to highlight step 2 in our #groundstop series- ʟɪꜱᴛᴇɴ ᴛᴏ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ɢʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ꜱᴛᴀꜰꜰ! On the ground staff are the first people to help you reroute your flight. You may have to stand in a long line to get to them but they are the best help. Case in point when our flight from Montreal was canceled, United Airlines automatically rebooked us. However, it was #Aircanada's on the ground staff at the gate that got us squared away with accommodations, meals, and transport, not to mention navigating the airport past immigration and to baggage claim. What a beautiful day it is today! The sun is shining and the warm weather abounds for a majority of the weekend. However just like last weekend a few storms are on the horizon. Last weekend the DC region experienced a major thunderstorm that brought wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour wind gusts, torrential downpours, and left in its wake fallen trees and countless homes without power. These weather events are sometimes very unexpected and can throw a wrench in your travel plans. What do you do when this happens? Step 1: Remain Calm You're likely not the only one going through this and countless flights have also been canceled. 🚫Groundstop 🚫 Twe weeks ago our flight was unexpectedly canceled on our return trip from Montreal at the last minute! Even before our flight to Boston was canceled, the Newark and Philly flights ahead of us had already been canceled due to the weather. Those passengers were being rerouted to Boston. But if you looked at the sky, checked a weather app or called your friends in those destinations, none of them reported any adverse weather, so why the cancellation due to weather?? Turns out all the flights were canceled due to a Groundstop! 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕚𝕤 𝕒 𝔾𝕣𝕠𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕡? A Groundstop is an order issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), that restricts planes from taking off or landing at specific airports due to weather, security, or other important concerns. This proactive action ensures the safety of passengers and crew during challenging conditions. ✈️✈️ During a Groundstop, flights may be diverted to alternative airports, or they may remain grounded until the order is lifted. Which is exactly what happened to our flight. On the ground the weather looked great but the FAA command center radar showed pockets of thunderstorms forming along the route. This in turn caused airlines to cancel flights up and down the entire East Coast. It was a bummer to not fly home on the day we wanted but happy that we were able to safely fly home the next day. While taking a trip to Canada is rarely on our list of must-see #destinations, we must say that's about to change with our trip most recent to Montreal. We've been here before but never really got to visit the area.
