Happy Womenās History Month! I have spent the last 9 months in quiet and working to cultivate self- discipline. Today Iāll be picking things up from where I left them a couple months back with sharing my struggle story. Iāll be focusing on self- sabotaging and self - limiting behaviors. We all want to be better and do more but many times change is so hard. Last year, I ran in my first track and field masters meet and it was incredible. On Saturday June 4th, I competed in another meet. My first event - the mile, was NOT a strong showing. As I waited for my next event - the 800m, I was mad at myself for my lack of commitment to training this season. Swipe ā¬ ļø for photos and videos. But in that moment, I had to make a conscious effort not to dwell on the past. Although I know thereās plenty of room for improvement, I ended up having a stronger showing at the 800m and a PR, shaving 10 secs off my time from last year. Now, I donāt share this to say if you just believe in yourself things will work out because we only get out what we put in. We can not expect more when we havenāt done the work for more. As I reflect on this season my biggest take- aways have been (swipe ā¬ ļø for more): 1. Shifting from Setting Results to Identity Based Goals: Many days I skipped my training runs because I was too terrified to find out what my baseline performance would be. Whenever I had a feeling I would be unable to hold the required pace or achieve the expected result for my workout I just chose not to do it. 2. Cultivating Identity Based Habits: My goal is to improve my endurance and speed. My IDENTITY is to become the person who never misses a training workout regardless of my pace. According to @jamesclear author of Atomic Habits āmany of us set performance and results based goals in hopes that it will force us to do things differently.ā But it does NOT. When we start focusing on building identity based habits the results will come later. Decide the type of person you want to be today and live up to the identity, and watch change happen. Have you struggled with self limiting and self sabotaging behaviors? What have you done to overcome them? As we wrap up womenās history month a few thoughts have continued to drop in my heart around maintaining a posture of gratitude and counting our blessings. Today, I will focus on the growth I have experienced in embracing my body after baby and how grateful I am for where I am in my motherhood journey. I have battled with embracing the permanent changes that have come with pregnancy. The three biggest permanent changes for me have been: stretch marks, Diastatis Recti, and Umbilical Hernia. But I have also felt guilty sharing my permanent changes because it seems so trivial and I know other women who have had to deal with bigger and life threatening changes in their motherhood journey. With all three permanent changes I have listed above šš¾ I can quite honestly hide them with my clothes so I have always felt who am I to complain. But these permanent changes however small are my own TRUTH and they have impacted my confidence and how I look at my body. After having my daughter I thought to myself āwell I will NEVER be able to do another fitness photo shoot until I can get my body particularly my midriff and core area back to the way it looked pre pregnancy.ā #throwback to last year as I celebrated my 30th birthday and with encouragement from family, friends and an amazing photographer @tarfphotography I worked up the courage to pose for another fitness photo shoot. Itās all a work in progress as you will notice I am still sporting a high waist short in my photo shoot. Swipe ā¬ ļø for photos. But I am choosing a posture of gratitude today and I invite you to do the same. I am grateful for how far I have come and maybe one day I wonāt feel so self conscious about my stretch marks or feel like I need to suck my stomach in to shrink the appearance of my outie belly button and umbilical hernia. Take stock of how far you have come and begin practicing a posture of gratitude. Today March 8 marks International Womenās day. The earliest Women's Day Observance was held on February 28, 1909 in New York. Since 1909, the world has come a long way and witnessed a significantĀ change in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation.Ā Ā However,Ā IĀ would be remiss if I did notĀ mention the geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine that we have watched unfold over these lastĀ couple weeks and how that is weighing heavily on my heart in addition to newsĀ about discriminationĀ raring its ugly head even during a period of war. At times like this when I do feel likeĀ there's nothing I can do, I take comfort in knowing that I can help by raising my voice and bringing awareness to the humanity of our daughters, our daughters children, ourĀ black and brown sisters, indigenous sisters and sister of colors. Happy International Womenās day! Letās keep breaking the bias!
As the situation of things continue to escalate with Russiaās invasion of Ukraine, and as we usher in a new month my heart is heavy š. Whether or not you know someone from Ukraine or have a personal connection or tie, itās hard to turn a blind eye and go on about your day. Through our cell phones and the internet we are watching a geopolitical invasion unfold before our eyes in the 21st century. I am praying for peace in Ukraine and for Godās protection over everyone as they flee and seek refuge in neighboring countries. Itās also truly sad to see how flawed humanity is and even in times of war, racism continues to rare itās ugly head as some of our BIPOC brothers and sisters have faced additional challenges trying to cross the border. I have personally struggled with feeling like thereās nothing I can do to support as I also work to vet out credible donation pages which I will share as soon as I have more information. However, there are other little ways for us to support. Swipe ā¬ ļø to see some ways in which you can support. As Black History Month (BHM) 2022 comes to a close, I have spent the entire month pondering on what this years Black History Month means to me. Since the start of the year the theme that has continued to come up for me is āpassing down history and legacy from generation to generation.ā This is what I jotted down in my journal and now as I type it still rings true for me. Celebrating BHM has been quite incredible as this year my daughter is actually able to say the words āBlack History Monthā āNigerianā , āAfricanā, āAmerican.ā The other night she asked if her baby sister š¶š½was African too, I guess our daughter knows something we donāt š. We act out every page of the book to truly bring the words and meaning to life for her. We have spent time reading some of her favorite black and female empowerment books like: Little leaders: Bold Women in Black History by @vashtiharrison Vashti Harrison , Harlemās Little Blackbird: The Story of Florence Mills by RenĆ©e Watson and Change Sings: A Childrenās Anthem by @amandascgorman Amanda Gorman . Swipe ā¬ ļøfor bookš covers. I am so grateful for the lovely authors and illustrators that help our children connect to their African American roots. As a Nigerian raising a Nigerian American daughter my heart longs to be able to share stories about my Nigerian roots with my daughter but this longing has also forced me to realize I do not know enough about my Nigerian and Yoruba roots. This year to begin my quest to pass down history and legacy from generation to generation Iāll be working to put together a docu series of interviews with family members. I hope to be able to report back on my progress as I embark on this new journey. I am excited to uncover my families life stories and untold stories. What does black history month mean to you this year? Comment down below šš¾and drop a heart š¤ if you made it past our daughterās joke in my long post.
Today February 23, 2022 marks two years since the untimely death of Ahmaud Arbery whose life was taken while jogging in his neighborhood. Although justice has now been served, his death still hurts and as a runner myself itās one that hits home for me. As I ran 2.23 miles today in honor of Ahmaud Arbery, I ran with a heavy heart knowing that on that day when Ahmaud laced up to go for a jog like I was doing he never expected for those to be his final miles. At times we may feel like thereās nothing we can do when events like this occur but I want to invite us to continue to work to dismantle the systems and constructs that make a murder like Ahmaudās possible and ordinary. Letās raise our voices and bring awareness to the humanity of our black and brown brothers and sisters, indigenous people and other people of color. #ahmaudarbery #ahmaudarberyday #223milesforahmaud #runningforahmaud #justice #blackhistorymonth #blacklivesmatter #running #runnerscommunity #runnersofinstagram
For the past 6 months I have struggled with being able to consistently complete my training runs. Bear with me for a moment as I share a quick look back story from year 2021. Last year I had the incredible opportunity of competing in my first masters and track meet in the U.S. During the 3 months leading up to my meet, I was in the best shape of my life physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. My meets went well and I placed in both my events (800m & 1500m) to my surprise š. Swipe ā¬ ļø foršø. Fast forward to 6 months post my track meet in June of 2021 and I have found myself in a bit of funk with running and staying motivated. Simply put I have been on the struggle bus šwith many weeks of logging zero miles of running. So when I had my break through week this week and completed all my runs for the first time in months I felt the Lord laid it in my heart to share my struggle story. I am still a work in progress and trying to get back on the saddle . Swipe ā¬ ļø to see a few tips on how to rediscover your fitness motivation. Have you been in a bit of funk lately? know that you are not alone. Share your struggle story? What has helped you? I would love to hear from you. Comment down below šš¾

It is always a blessing when I can wrap up my week celebrating four way wins. What are four way wins you might ask? According to Stewart Friedman author of Total Leadership " itās possible to create value for the different parts ā for work, home, community and your private self, the domain of mind, body and spirit ā in ways that you probably didnāt think about before." Although I have still yet to read the book in its entirety the section on four way wins and finding ways to integrate work, home, community and self is one that has resonated and resonates more with me now that I am a mother. I don't always do a good job finding ways to integrate all four domains of my life but when I do my heart is so full. This past weekend I kicked off my Friday by speaking about my career and career development to a group of wonderful high performing sophomores at my alma mater - the Eller College of Management. Following that, I got to spend time with my daughter on Saturday while serving in the community at my church's harvest festival. I volunteered in the Totland area as my daughter got the Guinness book of world record for the most number of timesš¢š” to go in and out of the bounce house that I was supervising . We were there for about 2 hours and thatās all she did. Letās just say she slept well last nightš¤£ Moments and weekends like this make me overjoyed and make me believe that although some circumstances may call for trade offs and sacrifices, we don't always have to give up on something in one area of our life in order to achieve or do something in another area of our life. If you have yet to read Total Leadership I encourage you to grab yourself a copy, or audio book it. Finally, as you go about your week, find those opportunities to bring one, two, three, four way you name it wins and successes in to your life. Make it a great week! Much love! ā¤ļø #totalleadership #work #home #community #self #fitspiration #selfcaresunday #sundaymornings
Happy Friday Beautiful people!! Permit me to interrupt your timelines as I am still basking in joy from my incredible birthday celebration this past Friday. I am so grateful to God šš¾for allowing me to see another year, a milestone birthday and to begin a new chapter of my life. I am so grateful to God for my amazing friends and family that took time out of their weekend to celebrate with me and surprise me.
